Rachel Pinkley

(Calc 1782 - )

I found Rachel on the 1850 census:

Barren, KY 1850 Federal Census (First Division minus Glasgow)
=========================================================================================================================
LN HN FN LAST NAME FIRST NAME AGE SEX RACE OCCUP. VAL. BIRTHPLACE MRD. SCH. R/W DDB

I wondered if she might be a daughter-in-law, because it is surprising that she would have been using her maiden name here. Maybe she was never married. Another thought I had was that maybe Rachel is from a previous marriage since she is so much older than some of the other children. Another researcher suggested that the Rachel mentioned in the 1850 census was the wife of George (they are both in house number 1184), but there is quite an age difference. Maybe this is a completely different Rachel from the one mentioned in Michael's will, or maybe the will lists Rachel as a daughter even though she's really a daughter-in-law.

According to Imogene Pinkley's book, William P. Pinkley 1804-1864 and his descendants, Michael's will said "Also my daughter, Rachel one bed a cow and thirty dollars." This makes it pretty clear that she is a daughter, not a daughter-in-law.

I received a message from another researcher who said, "Rachel was born in 1814, not 1790. She was the minor, about 14, in her father's will of 1828. She married Joseph Higgins Steenbergen." But I calculated her age from census, so I am not sure where the other person's information is coming form.
