"ERICUS SMIDT/SMITH b 31 May 1734 & Chr 3 Jan 1734 son of HansGeorge Smitt Sponsors: John Engeberg; Carl Christopher Springer; Mrs.Brita Suds (Seeds); Mrs. Betti Colsberg (Pg 91 Vol 4 DelawareGenealogical Society Journal & pg 360 Old Swedes Church). He was no doubtnamed after the beloved pastor of Old Swedes Church, Ericus Tobias Bjorkwho married his aunt, Christina Stalcop. Ericus married Brita Anderson(spelled Brigitto when married) 22 Nov 1753. She was probably born 17 Nov1733 dau of Peter Anderson & Kerstin (Old Swedes Church). When theirchildren were born, her name was spelled Brita & Brigito.
On 23 Nov 1756 Erick Smith of Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co.Yeoman & Bridget his wife sell to Thomas Shipley for three hundred & sixpounds 136 acres which was willed to him by his father Hanse Smithbearing date 12 Dec 1753. His father purchased the land from CharlesSpringer on 4th Nov 1732 recorded in Lib G pg 657 U. The land wasdescribed as being by a corner of Samuel Milner's land & by AndrewStalcop's tract. In the deed it states the original owners of the land.The will referred to in the deed has not been found on record in NewCastle Co. The deed was recorded 5 Dec 1788. (Pg

Ericus moved to Augusta Co., VA and the earliest record of him therewas on 18 Jun 1770 when he was a witness when Charles Hays, Sr. deededland to Charles Hays, Jr. (Pg 529 Chalkley's Chronicles of Scotch IrishSettlement-Augusta Co., VA) He was also a witness as Eracker Smith toJohn
Stephenson's estate on 14 Aug 1770. (pg 116 Chalkely's Chricles of ScotchIrish Settlement Vol 3).
Ericus served in Lord Dunmore's War and was at Elk Garden Fort in1774 where he was reported as "Found bread till 29 Aug" in Capt. DanielSmith's Co 13 Aug 1774. (Pg 81 Lord Dunmore's War Virginia ColonialMilitia) Elk Garden Creek where the fort was located during the LordDunmore's War, is now in Russell Co.
He was one of the appraisers of the estate of Richard Lenam on 9 May1778 in Washington Co, VA. (Pg 990 Annals of Southwest Virginia by LewisPreston Summers) Ericus appeared on John Kinkead's Tax List inWashington Co.
Ericus had a survey made on 4 Oct 1783 for 200 A on Waters ofThompson Creek a Branch of Clinch River in New Garden, Washington Co, VA.
On 9 Dec 1785 he was among the signers of a petition for division ofWashington Co, VA. Ericus Jr. and Eli Smith, his sons, were also signers.
His name appears on Major Dysart's Tax List of 1786 in WashingtonCo, VA.
On 17 Sep 1787 Ericus was a patentee for 82 A on waters of ThompsonCreek, a branch of Clinch River adj. Samuel Priest's land. (Bk 14 pg 12Commonwealth Grants & Patents for Washington Co, VA. (Land was laterlocated in Russell Co., VA).
On 2 Oct 1787 he had a patent for 200 A on the waters of ThompsonCreek branch of Clinch River (Bk 16 pg 166 Commonwealth Grants forWashington Co., VA)
In 1792 property tax was paid by Andrew Smith assignee of EricusSmith-200 A & in the 1793 property taxes were paid by Eli Smith assigneeof Ericus Smith-60 Acres.
He probably died in 1792 as his wife, Bridget appears as head ofhouse with one tithable (one son) on 15 Mar 1793 in Russell Co., VA. Sheprobably died about 1797 when children sold property.
Three indentures appear in Russell Co, VA Deed books. One was dated21 August 1797 between Ericus Smith and Rosanna his wife, Andrew Smith &Rachel his wife, Ephraim Hatfield and Mary his wife, Joseph Hatfield andRachel his wife of Russell Co, VA selling land to Ely Smith for 100pounds land containing 94 acres being part of a tract of land lying andbeing in New Garden. (pg 336-338). One dated 22 Aug 1797 between ElySmith and Jane his wife, Andrew Smith and Rachel his wife and EphraimHatfield and Mary his wife of the Co. of Russell and Joseph Hatfield andRachel his wife of the Co. of Lee to Ericus Smi th of Russell Co for acertain sum for a certain tract of land being on the waters of Thompson'screek containing 106 acres. Same day between Aly Smith, Ericus Smith andAndrew Smith o f Russell Co to Jospeh Hatfield for 40 pound landcontaining 82 A by survey being 4 May 1784 lying in Russell on the watersof Thompson's Creek a branch of Clinch River...on Samuel Priest's corner.This land was Ericus Smith, Sr. property according to the above deedtransactions.
Ericus & Bridget had 6 Children. The "Archivum Americanum, Swedish Churches on the Delaware" lists membersof Christina Congregation, 1753-54. This lists Hans Smidt, hat-maker;Andreas Smidt, his son; Eric Smidt, his son, and Brigita Anderson,servant. All speak Swedish but can understand, speak and read English.
Deed records from New Castle County (particularly in 1756) prove thelinkage of Ericus and Brita with the Stallcop, Peterson, and Smithlines. Leslie Collier's material contains the a transcript of this.
Ericus Smith & family are missing from Nov of 1757 when son John wasburied in Old Swedes Church in Wilmington until Apr of 1770 when hebegins making continuous records in Southwestern Virginia. These are theyears in which most of his children were born. A very major issue to beresolved is his location for these black hole years. His brothersFrederick & Tobias were in Virginia and regularly kick up in records, butEricus is notable by his absence. Have checked Orange Co, NC; Rowan Co,NC; Orange Co, VA; Frederick Co, VA, Berkeley Co, VA; Lunenberg, VA; Isleof Wight, VA. Need to examine Bedford Co, VA, then PA & MD.
Though records of the family stop after 1756, in 1770 they are living inAugusta Co., VA, where Ericus is cited for failure to report to a musterroll on April 9, 1770.
Settled in Washington Co, VA, in 1773 (area now in Russell Co), dated1783 but referencing actual settlement on the land in 1773.

"Lord Dunmore's War: "After Jno Connally, the agent of Jno Murray,Earl of Dunmore, Royal Gov of Va, took possession of Fort Pitt, he namedit Fort Dunmore early in 1774. He attempted retaliation for the Indianoutrages and on 10 June the Gov called out the militia of southwest Vaunder the command of Gen Andw Lewis . In August the militia of FrederickCo under Maj Angus McDonald raided the Indian towns on the MuskingumRiver. Lord Dunmore came to the frontier and called on the neighboringmilitia to join in the expedition against the hostiles. Before hisforces could join those of Gen Lewis, the Indians attacked the latter on10 Oct. The Indians were soundly defeated at the battle of PointPleasant...List of the men in Capt Daniel Smith's Co 13 Aug 1774. Ericus Smith's name appears among others on a monument commemorating theBatle of Point Pleasant, the first battle of the American Revolution.

In October of 1783 Robert Preston surveyed the land of Ericus Smith. Hehad 200 acres in the dist. of Washington and Montgonery Cos., VA, on thewaters of the Thompson's Creek branch of the Clinch River, land which bevery close to that of Joseph Hatfield.
