Elisha Putnam II

Elisha Putnam lived in Sutton, or in that part of the town now called Oxford. During the French and Indian War he served in the Provincial army and during the campaign of 1758 against Ticonderoga, he lost his life. Great numbers of the Provincial troops were killed or lost during this campaign, as the commander, Gen Abercrombie, was not only a coward in battle but an incompetent leader. The assault on Ticonderoga was continued all day by the Provincials and Regulars and over 1900 were slain.

(IV) Elisha Putnam , son of Edward (3) lived on and near the place known as the James Freeland farm. He probably came to Sutton as early as 1725; was admitted to the church in 1730, and chosen a deacon in 1731. He was town clerk and also town treasurer. His children were: Elisha, born December 1715, died in 1758; Nehemiah, March 22, 1719, died November 27, 1791; Jonathan, July 19, 1721; Hannah, married (first) Timothy Holten, February 24, 1742, and (second) John Whipple -( No this is wrong. It was her sister, Susanna who married Holten and Whipple, Hannah married Jonathan Dudley )-; Mary, June 12, 1725, died April 22, 1736; Stephen, April 1728; Amos, July 22, 1730, died September 17, 1811; Eunice, July 6, 1732, died at Windham, unmarried; Huldah, May 25, 1734, married a Matthews; Rufus, April 7, 1738.
