Joseph W. Skluzacek, aged New Prague resident and retired Helena township farmer, died at 6:15 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Mikiska, in New Prague. He had been ill about three months.
Born on March 15, 1874, Mr. Skluzacek had attained the age of 87 years. His parents were Wenceslaus and Elizabeth Kodadek Skluzacek of Helena township. He attended St. Wenceslaus parochial school at New Prague. He later became engaged in farming and continued his residence in Helena township until 1936, when he retired to live in New Prague.
He had been a member of the school board in his district. He was a member of the Katolicky Delnik and he had also served as an officer in the fraternal association.
Mr. Skluzacek married Agnes Trenda at New Prague on Aug. 19, 1903. She died June 1, 1918. Also preceding him in death were one son John, who died at the age of five years, in 1922; his parents; three sisters, Sister Wenceslaus (Katherine), Mrs. James (Mary) Krenik and Mrs. Fr. (Elizabeth) Malecha; and two brothers, the Rev. Father James Skluzacek, who died in 1948, and Frank Skluzacek, in 1960.
Surviving him are two sons, the Rev. Father Stanley Skluzacek, of Olivia, and James Skluzacek, Crystal Lake, Ill.; and four daughters, Mrs. George (Helen) Mikiska, of New Prague, Elizabeth Skluzacek, in St. Paul, Mrs. Mary Sirek, Rice Lake, Wis., and Sister Agnesia, O. S. F., (Rose), at Racine Wis. There are also 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. One sister survives. She is Sister Wenceslaus, O. S. F., (Christine), in Milwaukee, Wis.
Requiem services for Mr. Skluzacek were intoned in the Church of St. Wenceslaus at New Prague on Monday, May 8, at 9:30 a.m. Rt. Rev. Msgr. C. M. Popelka was celebrant of the Mass, Rev. Father Alfred Skluzacek was deacon and Rev. Father Richard Skluzacek of St. Paul, was sub-deacon. Also present in the sanctuary were Msgr. Joseph Ettel, of New Ulm, Rev. Father John Wagener, of Olivia, Rev. Father Mark Otto of Bird Island, Rev. Father George Skluzacek, St Paul, Rev. Father S . J. Srnec, Minneapolis, Rev Father John Savage, Green Isle, Rev. Father Arthur Guillemette, of Jossenland, Rev. Father Alvin Simon, Hopkins, Rev. Father Leonard Hirman, of New Market and Rev. Father Gerald Schunk.
Burial was in the parish cemetery. Allan and Stanley Skluzacek, George Mikiska Jr. and John Anton and Ralph Sirek were pallbearers.
