Andrew's father, William, in 1783 bought a large farm in that part of Lancaster, Worcester, MA, which soon after set of as the new pown of Sterling, MA. This farm he divided into two, building a new house for himself, and establishing his oldest son, Andrew, in the old farmhouse, a very old but substantially built oak-framed house, which was still standing (1890) in good repair.
Andrew d in 1809, leaving his widow with six children, of whom the youngest was less than two years old. Accident and diease carried off all except the oldest and the youngest before the latter had finished his college course, and he was familiar from his earliest years with sorrow and care, as well as with the noblest patience and courage.
