Biography

This is the profile for Agnes Tippet who was buried in Bristol, England on March 30, 1630 and who, as discussed below, was no doubt the first wife of Walter Tibbot of Gloucester, Massachusetts and the mother of his children.
First Wife of Walter Tibbot and Mother of His Children

As discussed in the profile for Walter Tibbot, although several secondary sources, and Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 in reliance on them, show that Walter's only wife and the mother of both of his children was named Mary, there is no evidence that Walter was ever married to a woman named Mary. Instead, recent research using databases of English records has discovered that Walter had two wives, the first of which was this profile's Agnes (Unknown) Tippet/Tibbot, who was also the mother of his two known children. Set forth below is the evidence and argument supporting that assertion:
Prior research had established that Walter had a daughter named Agnes, who had married a man whose last name was Dyke, prior to daughter Agnes immigrating to New England.[1][2]
There is a record of the marriage of Henry Dicke and Agnes Tibbott, daughter of Walter Tibbott, on February 9, 1631/2 at St. Philip & St. Jacob's in Bristol, England.[3] It is highly probable that this is a record of the marriage of Walter's daughter Agnes.
There is a record of the burial of an Agnes Tippet, wife of Water Tippet, on March 30, 1630 at St. Philip & St. Jacob's in Bristol, England,[4][5] as well as a record of the marriage of Water Tippet and Jone Hill on May 24, 1630 at St. Philip & St. Jacob's in Bristol.[6][7] Based on the dates and locations, there is little doubt that the Water Tippet whose wife Agnes was buried in March 1630 was the same Water Tippet who married Jone Hill in May 1630. Since the church where Agnes Tippet was buried and where Water Tippet married Jone Hill is the same as the church where Agnes Tibbott, the daughter of Walter Tibbott, was married, it is highly probable that Water Tippet and Walter Tibbott were the same person.
The fact that Walter's eldest daughter was named Agnes is consistent with her mother being named Agnes.
Since Agnes died in 1630, well after the estimated dates of birth of Walter's two children, Agnes would have been their mother.Parentage; Maiden Name; Date and Place of Birth

The parentage and maiden name of Agnes are unknown and her date and place of birth are uncertain. Based on the estimated date of birth of her elder daughter Agnes (1605-1614), Agnes was probably born sometime in 1580-1596, with about 1588 being a reasonable midpoint estimate. Since the only records for Agnes that have been found are from Bristol, England, Agnes was probably born in or near Bristol.
Marriage

Agnes and Walter's date and place of marriage are uncertain. Based on the estimated date of birth of their elder daughter Agnes (1606-1614) and Walter's estimated date of birth of 1584, Agnes and Walter were probably married sometime in 1605-1614, with about 1610 being a reasonable mid-point estimate. Since the only records for Agnes and Walter in England are from Bristol, they were probably married in or near Bristol.
Children

Agnes and Walter had the following children:
Agnes, b. probably sometime in 1605-1614 in Wales, m. 1st 9 Feb 1631 Henry Dicke in Bristol, England, m. 2d about 1632(??) Edmund Clark probably in or near Bristol, England, m. 3d 15 Jun 1668 Thomas Penny in Gloucester, Massachusetts,. d. 23 Feb 1681/2 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. (See discussion and sources in Agnes' profile.)
Mary, b. probably sometime in 1618-1625 in Wales, m. 6 Nov 1643 William Haskell in Gloucester, Massachusetts, d. 16 Aug 1693 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. (See discussion and sources in Mary's profile.)Death

Agnes was buried in Bristol, England on March 30, 1630.[4][5]
