Biography

John Sill (otherwise written Scill, Syll, and Scyll) was possibly born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England [1] or Lyme Regis, England (which is over 350 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne). Unfortunately, different genealogy books that indicate the same spouse and children indicate these two vastly different birthplaces. However, based on his wedding location of Ryton (if that is correct), he was likely born in Newcastle upon Tyne and not Lyme Regis, since Ryton is located (fewer than 10 miles away from Newcastle upon Tyne. John's birth year is an estimate based on his marriage date and estimation provided by Old Silltown.[2]
He married Joanna in 1632 in Ryton, Durham, England.[3][2].[4]
John Sill, his wife Joanna, and their infant children arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts around 1637.[1][2][5] "After they arrived certain difficulties arose, and John complained that 'somethings coming in my way that troubled my mind for my place of settling.' But, by 2 May 1638, he attained freemanship, and the following year purchased a house, with a garden and a 'backside,' on the southeast corner of Eliot and Winthrop streets." [6][7][8] [9][10][11]
He was received as member in full communion of the Congregational Society of Cambridge, Rev. Thomas Shepherd pastor.[2]
He was living in 1647, when he was among the creditors of a certain estate, and in 1648-9 he was named among the proprietors of land in Cambridge, but he died before 1652, because his wife is spoken of as a widow. [2] "The division at Shawshine finds Widow Sill being granted forty acres, so John Sill was deceased by 1652. The size of the grant gives no clear indication of his former status because widows received a significantly decreased allotment."[6][8]

Daughter: Judith (born in Cambridge, Mass., 1st married Mr. Philbrook; 2nd married Abraham Shepherd, of Malden, Mass on 2 January 1673.)[2][5] [12]Research Notes

The Old Silltown book references Mrs. Joanna Sill as his wife. I have not found any references (yet) about her maiden name.[2]
There is a John Sill who was baptized on 2 April 1615 in Culmstock, Devon, England with parents William and Anne, who might be the same John Sill in this profile; Culmstock is located about 26 miles from Lyme Regis, which was a potential birthplace of John. [13]
There is a John Sill who was born and baptized in Heversham, Westmorland, England in 1607, but that is over 100 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, so this is not likely the same John Sill.[14]
See Joanna Banning Fillbrook for information Joanna Fillbrook/Fillbrock, who is not John Sill's wife; she would have been too young to have a child (9 years old). This profile needs additional work.[15]
Marriage records from England show a John Sill married Joan in 1632 in Ryton, Durham, England. This is possibly the same Joanna, as this is before 1635, as suggested by the Cambridge records.[16]
Interesting quick research about marriage in the 1600s: The age of consent for women was 12 years old and 15 for boys, although this was not the mean or average. Between 1566 and 1619, the mean marriage age was 27 years old. Between 1647 and 1719, the average was 29.6 years old. In 1619, the average age for a man was about 23.[17] If the marriage to Johanna was indeed in 1632, John might have been born around 1609.
Needs

Needs additional research to find his parents, any siblings, and more information about his supposed daughter, Judith.
Needs additional research about his birthplace. Two different sources indicate locations that are hundreds of miles apart. There are multiple John Sills who lived in that time period. Did not find birth or baptism records for the time period near Newcastle upon Tyne.Sources
