Abijah PUTNAM

( - )

or Benajah
Was born before 21 Oct 1744 in Sutton (2467). He was baptized 21 Oct 1744 in Sutton (2468, 2469). He served in the military in 1777 in Bennington, Bennington, VT (2470). A payroll of Capt Josiah Boyden's Company in Col William William's regiment of Militia in the service of the United States, on an expedition to Bennington, &c., in 1777.
Name: Benajah Putnam; Entered: Aug. 29; Discharged: Oct 11; Days: 23; Pr day: 1.8; Total: 1.18.4. He appeared on the 1790 census in Cambridge, Washington, NY (1271). The census info is 1-3-2. He was on 1800 census in Washington county, NY (2472) and 1810 in Washington County NY (2473. He died after 1818 (2474). Shown living in Ontario in 1818. Benajah was born to Asaph and Sarah (Park) in Sutton, MA. When his father relocated to Queensbury, NY Benejah must have been in his teens and still dependant on his parents. The Queensbury town records list Benajah as the Pathfinder for the community in 1766. He would have been 22 at the time. He moved to the Hampshire Grants (later known as Vermont) sometime bewteen 1766 and 1776. He obtained land (lot No. 95) on 5 June 1782 in the eastern section ofthe town of Dummerston. 10 days later he sold a portion of that land to Jonas Livermore. He sold some land in lot numbers 110 and 111 on 1 Nov 1785 (no record of him purchasing the land). Some records show that Benajah married Abigail although census data after the 1800's name Elizabeth as his wife. It is possible that Abigail was Benajah's first wife. They had five children between 1776 and 1786, all born in Dummerston. In 1790 Benajah was listed as a resident of Pittstown, NY. On 25 June 1791 he sells 48 acres in lot No 95 to Seth Hudson. He may have made at least one more move in his life time. In the early 1800's his three sons purchased land in Canada and took up residence in Wolford Twp. Although prior assessment listings do not mention Benajah, a listing for 1818 records Joel (38), Elizabeth (37), Lonson Cross (12), Bennajah Putnam (73) and Elizabeth Putnam (72) as one household. Fron this point on there is no record of Benajah. Nor is there a record of his burial in any of the local cemeteries in Wolford. Perhaps he returned to the US or died in Canada and was buried in a grave which is not marked today.
