John Kerr started a brewery business and became very rich. He was succeeded by his sons, as T B Kerr & Co who became HR Kerr & Co. Hamilton Kerr continued the business and took in various partners between 1870 and 1879, the last being Kerr and Smith. Hamilton Kerr was considered wealthy and is said to have spent $75,000 on the brewery four years ago when it changed from ale to lager.
HR died in April 1880 leaving an estate of $200,000/ His widow inherited one third. She continued the business with Mr Smithm her father, the chattele of the brewery belonging to the estate of HR Kerr, and the brewery portion to the estate of John Kerr.
Mr Smith was formerly President of the Harlem Bank and the Smith & Sayre Manufacturing Company. Her name was Emily W Kerr and his was Addison Smith.
