Joseph Frederick Long

Frederick J. Long, 79, of Butler died Monday, March 4, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Litchfield Family Funeral Service in Litchfield. Private family funeral services will be held Friday, March 8, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield.

Mr. Long was born in Cresco, IA, on July 7, 1933, the son of the late Charles and Frances (Dotzler) Long. He married Carolyn Owens at Ft. Harrison Military Chapel in Indianapolis, IN, on Oct. 3, 1964, and she survives in Butler.

After serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy, he retired as chief petty officer. He served as the trauma coordinator of the newly formed Illinois Statewide Trauma Program based at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. After the trauma program was purchased out, he accepted a position in environmental services at St. Francis Hospital.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Long is survived by sons, Michael Long and Patrick (wife Stephanie) Long, both of Hillsboro; daughters, Kathleen Estell of Greensboro, NC, and Colleen Dyer of Butler; grandchildren, Lauren, Christopher, Ysabelle and Graci; and sister, Ardith Crimmins of Stillwater, MN.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Long.
