Nathan Putnam

Nathan Putnam was an energetic and popular man. He was known as "Esquire" Putnam and was noted for the great number of marriages he performed. He bought the original homestead of Isaac Putnam from Phineas Putnam, but his son Captain Abner Putnam sold the place. Nathan Putnam operated a trip-hammer run by horse-power and carried on the manufacture of scythes, enjoying the credit of being the father of scythe-making in Massachusetts. Many of his descendants have been in the same line of business.

On 1800 Sutton census (2514) The 1810 Sutton census (1515). He is listed as Nathan Esq in this census. He died 6 Aug 1813 in Sutton (2526, 2517). He was buried in Sutton.
He married Betsey Buffington dau of James Buffington and Elizabeth Gold, on 2 Aug 1752 in Salem (2518). Betsey was born 28 Feb 1734 in Salem Village (2519) Another source has a September birth. She died on 26 Aug 1810 in Sutton (2520, 2521).

He was a blacksmith (2530). Zadock Putnam marched as "fifer" in Capt Luke Drury's company of minute men, on the Lexington Alarm of 19 April 1775, and continued in service until August of that year.
On 21 August 1777, the stste militia were ordered to march to Bennington and we find him serving as sergeant in Capt Joseph Warren's company. He was a blacksmith and lived in Grafton. He owned land in Millsbury, Shewsbury and Rutland.

Micah born 8 Apr 1754 in Sutton (2531, 2532 2533). Salem vital records indicate birth was in Salem on same date/ He is on 1790 Hubbardston, Worcester, MA census 1-4-4
He is said by an ancient authority to have had 11 children and 17 grandchildren living in 1835. He lived with his son James during his last years of his life.

James was born 26 Nov 1755 in Sutton (2535, 2536, 2537). Salem vital records indicate birth was in Salem on the same date. He died in 1785, He resided in Grafton, Windham, VT (2538). James was killed by the breaking of a grindstone. Administation on his estate to his widow 6 Sept 1785. He is said to have had 5 grandchildren in 1835.

Tamar was born 23 Oct 1768 in Sutton (2569, 2570, 2571). Salem vital records has birth in Salem on the same date. She died 6 Dec 1819 (2572).

Polly was born on 1 Apr 1770 in Sutton (2573, 2574, 2575). Salem records has birth in Salem on same date. She died bef 1802.

John was born 3 Sep 1771 in Sutton (2577, 2578, 2579). Salem vital records has the birth in Salem on same date. He was in 1800 New Ipswich, Hillsborough, NH census (2580). 1810 in Peterborough, Hillsborough, NH (2582). He died in 1886 (2582). He was a scythe maker (2583). Said to have three other children born before 1835. Eben and History of Sutton seem to have assigned the wrong children to John and Anna (Steven, Harvey, Gardner). These children belong to John and Anne (powers) Putnam.
