Individual Details
Mary Agnes (Polly) Mullins
(1765 - 24 Jul 1854)
MARRIAGE: According to affidavits made by Mary Mullins Polly, Letcher Co. Court, March 1850 and 1851, she was married to Edward Polly in Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1784 by a Baptist minister named Bailey.
BIOGRAPHY: Mary Mullins Polly executed a deed in connection with Edward Polly for 250 acres of land conveyed by them to one Daniel Witcher in the county of Pittsylvania signed in the names of Edward & Agnes Polly...executed as the then wife of Edward Polly to whom she was lawfully married in the yr 1784. Her name has been alternately called & written Mary and Agnes though most generally called Mary. Mary and Edward lived in Pittsylvania Co. for the space of about 8 yrs after marriage...about the yr 1792...they came to reside in the state of Tennessee where they continued to live together for the space of 30(?)yrs., at the end of which time they came to reside in Letcher Co. KY.
BIOGRAPHY: Mary Agnes Mullins' brother Joshua served with Edward Polly in the Revolution. Apparently they were good friends.
BIOGRAPHY: Joshua married Bess Turley, in Pittsylvania Co., VA on March 7, 1786. I have a copy of the marriage bond, for fifty pounds, made by Joshua and his brother James to Patrick Henry Esq. Joshua and James Turley, Bess' father signed the document by making their mark. Whether Joshua and Edward left for TN at the same time I do not know, but that is most likely, since migrating in family groups was the common practice. Sometime later in TN, Bess died, and Joshua married Ann Robinson.
BIOGRAPHY: Several of these relatives and friends and their families left
Virginia for Tennessee sometime in the 1790's. The first five children of
Edward and Mary Agnes were born in VA. They lived in TN for some thirteen yrs. by 1805, they had moved into what was then, Floyd Co., KY. Most of the children were still at home in Floyd Co. at the time of the 1810 census. In the Floyd Co. court reports is the following item dated Mar 1814: "Report of the road from Charles Lewis to the mouth of Rockhouse received. Ordered that Edward Polly be appointed supervisor of the same." It should be noted that the great majority of Pollys who are descendants of Edward spell their name without the (e). I have always used the (e) as did all of my father's brothers.
Accordingly I have used that spelling although it is not the way that is most
common. (information from Joel Logsdon).

Mary Agnes MULLINS (3) (4) was born in 1768 in Pittsylvania, VA. She died on 24 Jul 1854 in Ermine, Letcher, KY. She has reference number 165. 7 June 1847 Mary swears: "they were married before her husbands service expired in the army and was married in the county of Pittsylvania Virginia. ... the precise year of the marriage took place and day she does not recollect and that she never has been married to any other individual whatever ... "
4 Mar 1850 Mary swears: "her maiden name was Mary Mullen, that she was
married to the said Edward Polly in the year 1784, that said marriage
took place in the county of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia, that the
ceremony of her said marriage was performed by a Baptist minister
named Bailey, that she has no record of her said marriage ...that her
said husband owned land in the said county of Pittsylvania which he
conveyed by deed to Daniel Witcher in the year 1787, that she and her
said husband lived in the said county of Pittsylvania for the space of
about 8 years after their marriage that about the year 1792 she with
her said husband came to reside in the state of Tennessee where they
continued to live together for the space of 30 years at the end of
which time they came to reside in the county of Letcher where she now
resides."
6 Mar 1851 Mary swears: "she is the same identical person who executed
a deed in connection with the said Edward Polly for 250 acres of land
conveyed by them to one David Witcher in the county of Pittsylvania
... 16 Apr 1787 is signed in the names of Edward & Agnes Polly ...
that she executed the then deed as the then wife of the said Edward
Polly to whom she was lawfully married in the year 1784. That her
name has been alternately called & written Mary and Agnes though most
generally of late called Mary.."
6 Mar 1851 her son David Polly swears: "he has heard his said father
say that he was lawfully married to his aforesaid wife in the year
1784 in the county of Pittsylvania ... and that his said father did
own a tract of Land which he sold Daniel Witcher in the year of 1787
..."

[Letter from Gwen Boyer Bjorkman] Edward's brother David Polly also appears on the 1810 Floyd County, Kentucky Census. Edward Polly was appointed surveyor of the road from Charles Lewis' to the mouth of Rockhouse at the 28th of March 1814 Floyd County term of court. On 22 Oct. 1816, he registered a land warrant for 50 acres on the North Fork of the Kentucky River in Floyd County---this does not represent the actual date of settlement which in most cases was earlier. This area became Perry County in 1821 and then Letcher County in 1842. At the November 1823 Perry County, Kentucky term of court, Edward Polly was paid $15 for keeping Mary Mullins for 1824.
