Mary Agnes (Polly) Mullins

(1765 - 24 Jul 1854)

MARRIAGE: According to affidavits made by Mary Mullins Polly, Letcher Co. Court, March 1850 and 1851, she was married to Edward Polly in Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1784 by a Baptist minister named Bailey.

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Mullins Polly executed a deed in connection with Edward Polly for 250 acres of land conveyed by them to one Daniel Witcher in the county of Pittsylvania signed in the names of Edward & Agnes Polly...executed as the then wife of Edward Polly to whom she was lawfully married in the yr 1784. Her name has been alternately called & written Mary and Agnes though most generally called Mary. Mary and Edward lived in Pittsylvania Co. for the space of about 8 yrs after marriage...about the yr 1792...they came to reside in the state of Tennessee where they continued to live together for the space of 30(?)yrs., at the end of which time they came to reside in Letcher Co. KY.

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Agnes Mullins' brother Joshua served with Edward Polly in the Revolution. Apparently they were good friends.

BIOGRAPHY: Joshua married Bess Turley, in Pittsylvania Co., VA on March 7, 1786. I have a copy of the marriage bond, for fifty pounds, made by Joshua and his brother James to Patrick Henry Esq. Joshua and James Turley, Bess' father signed the document by making their mark. Whether Joshua and Edward left for TN at the same time I do not know, but that is most likely, since migrating in family groups was the common practice. Sometime later in TN, Bess died, and Joshua married Ann Robinson.

BIOGRAPHY: Several of these relatives and friends and their families left
Virginia for Tennessee sometime in the 1790's. The first five children of
Edward and Mary Agnes were born in VA. They lived in TN for some thirteen yrs. by 1805, they had moved into what was then, Floyd Co., KY. Most of the children were still at home in Floyd Co. at the time of the 1810 census. In the Floyd Co. court reports is the following item dated Mar 1814: "Report of the road from Charles Lewis to the mouth of Rockhouse received. Ordered that Edward Polly be appointed supervisor of the same." It should be noted that the great majority of Pollys who are descendants of Edward spell their name without the (e). I have always used the (e) as did all of my father's brothers.
Accordingly I have used that spelling although it is not the way that is most
common. (information from Joel Logsdon).
