Julius Grove was born in Barsness township, Pope County, on May 23, 1872, which would have been 65 years ago, had he lived a week longer. His parents were Olaus Olson Grove and Ragnhild Gilbertson, pioneer settlers of Pope County.
His father, Olaus holds the distinction of being Pope County's first settler. He visited Pope County as early as 1859, and trapped in the vicinity in which he took homestead. In the year 1861, he squatted on Lot one Section 2 in the township of Barsness and has the official record of being Pope County's first pioneer.
Julius O. Grove attended country school in Dist. 35, Pope County, then took a business course in Minneapolis. He taught rural schools in Pope County for 2 years, then attended the St. Cloud Teacher's College, and graduated from the Advanced Course in 1897. After his graduation he was superintendent of the high school in Houston, MN. After teaching one year, he decided to study law and entered the University of Minnesota, and was admitted to the bar in the spring of 1901 when he opened a law office in Glenwood, MN.
In 1902, he was elected county attorney of Pope County which office he held for 8 consecutive terms or 16 years. He served one term in the Minnesota Legislature. For several years, he was a member of the Board of Education of the Glenwood Public Schools, has been a director of the Glenwood State Bank, and has held other offices of trust in the community.
On Sept. 14, 1901, he was married to Jennie Dalager of Glenwood. To this union five children were born: Rawland of Glenwood, Mrs. H. L. Martin f Little Falls, Joseph of St. Paul, Jerome of Glenwood, and Lt. Edward of Fort Lewis, WA. His surviving near relatives are his wife, children, one grandchild Roderick Grove, and one sister, Mrs. J. M. Brendal of Hallock, MN.
