Obituary

Christian Stanger, one of the pioneer residents of Stearns County, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his grandson, Ben J Stanger. He had been suffering for the past six weeks and death came as a relief. He was eighty-nine years and four days old, having celebrated his birthday last week.

Mr. Stanger, who has lived in Stearns County for the past sixty-five years, has had many experiences typical of the hard pioneer days. He was born in Dettigen, Wurtenburg, Germany, February 11, 1831. He came to America at the age of twenty-one, in company with his mother, and his brothers Adam and John. The latter came to Minnesota, being the first man to reach the resent site of St Cloud, according to his records. Christian, with his mother and brother Adam settled in Campel County, Kentucky. April 2, 1855 he was married to Miss Catherine Dressler. They took a novel honeymoon journey, one that might not appeal to the bride of today, but which would not have appeared as a hardship to the average pioneer woman of the early days of Minnesota. They walked from Kentucky to St Cloud, getting a lift now and then from teams going their way. They went at first to make their home with John and experienced more hardships of the early days, viewed from the present, living in a sod shanty until logs could be cut for a more commodious dwelling. They lived here until about 1890, when they moved to St Cloud, making their home at 804 sixth Avenue S. The old Stanger place as it was called, has since been sold to H. Powelson.

Following the death of his first wife, Mr. Stanger was married on Dec. 13,1895, to Miss Caroline Cers, who survives him. There are three children living, Henry, who has a farm on the Rockville Road, Adam, of Paynesville, and Mrs Frank Block, of Edmonton, Canada, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stanger, was a man of the hardy pioneer type, whose life, with a record of the difficulties surmounted, is an inspiration to those enjoying the fruits of the efforts of the early settlers of the community.

The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock at the home of the grandson, B.J. Stanger, 823 Sixth avenue S. Rev. WM Vetter, of the Church of the Evangelical Association will officiate. Interment will be in the Stanger cemetery west of the city.

Chris Stanger, a pioneer resident of this city, died at the home of his grandson, Ben Stanger, on 823 Suxth avenue south, from complications. Death came as a relief after suffering of six weeks, at the age of 89 years.

Mr Stanger was born in Wurtenberg Germany, and came to this country at the age of 21, locating at Campel county, Kentucky. In April he sent for Miss Catherine Dressler, of Wurtenberg, Germany, and they were married in May 1855. Shortly after their marriage the couple left for St Cloud, enduring many hardships before they reached here. They had to walk most of the way, riding only when emigrants with teams of oxen gave them a lift. They purchased a farm out of St Cloud, on the Rockville road, and resided there for many years.

In 1895 Mrs. Stanger died and Mr. Stanger was re-married in 1897 to Miss Carolina Cores. Surviving him are his wife and three children, Herman (should be Henry) located on a farm out of St Cloud: Adam of Paynesville, and Mrs. Frank Block of Canada. Gethsemane Evangelical church began when the early immigrants gathered in the homes of the Block and Pramann’s for worship.  In 1861 pastors from the Paynesville Mission served this congregation.  In 1873, a St. Cloud Mission was established, it consisted of four appointments:  St. Cloud (Grace), Bretzkes (Zion), Blocks (Gethsemane), and Stangers.  It was served by pastors from St. Cloud until 1911 when it was joined to the South Haven Mission
