Lt James Putnam was born on 4 Sep 1661 in Salem Village (338, 339). He was baptized on 14 Jul 1667 in First Church, Salem (340). He died on 7 Apr 1727 in Salem Village (341). James was a farmer inheriting, from his father, the homestead at Oak Knoll. He in turn passed it to his youngest son Jethro. James Putnam was a freeman 1690, and in the year 1710-11 was tything man at the Village. In 1720-21 he is styled on the records "Lieut." but with this exception he was only the title of "Mr" which title was always scrupulously given him. Although never caring to hold office he was evidently esteemed bu the townspeople. He was the first to send a son to Harvard University. His son Archelaus died an undergraduate. The following from the Salem town records relative to the appointment of the rights to the common land is interesting as showing that the original homestead remained in his hands.

Captain Jonathan Putnam was the most active person in adjusting these common rights. He served the proprietors on the "Grand Committee" for twenty-two years, and was frequently one of the selectmen during this period that we have the records of those latter meetings of the proprietors, so complete.
James Putnam had been taught a trade, and he in his turn taught his son the same trade, that of bricklayer. This was a custom among many Puritan families. It is to the credit of all concerned, that far-sighted and wealthy men of that day brought up their sons to know a useful trade in case adversity should overtake them. "5th Dec 1718, James Putnam, senior, bricklayer, land in Danvers." In 1721 and 1722 he deeds land to his sons Nathan, Bartholomew and James "from natural love and affection." In one of these deeds (1722) he mentions his daughter Elizabeth Putnam. (Essex Deeds, L. 39-40-35.)
He testified in 1720 that he built the chimney in the house Alexander Osbourn built on James Prince's farm. This house must have been built between 1675 and 1692. It still stood in 1895 on Spring Avenue, Danvers.
He was married to Sarah Brocklebank (daughter of John Brocklebank and Sarah Woodman) about 1685 (20). Sarah Brocklebank was born on 11 Sep 1664 in Rowley, Essex, MA (342, 20) She was buried in Dec 1717 in Wadsworth Cem, Salem, MA (343). She died on 25 Dec 1717 in Salem (344, 20, 345). On 10 Nov 1689, she signed the petition presented to the Church in Salem for dismissal asnd liberty to form a new church at the Village and in 1693 (4 Feb 1692/93), she joins with her husband in a deed of that date, transferring land to Joseph and Caleb Boynton of Rowley. She is buried by the side of her son Archelaus. Lt. James and Sarah had the following children:
