Individual Details

Harriet WELHAM

(1857 - 1900)

In the 1891 census there are 3 children all born before Charles & Harriett married in 1883.but with the surname Laffling. Going back to the 1881 census shows Samuel & Gertrude as Welhams (Margaret was not born until 1882). This does not imply they are Harrietts illegitimate children beecause there is also in 1881a child Agnes age 12 and unlikely that Harriett had a child at 11. Nevertheless Harriett is not at the family home in 1871 where Agnes is a one year old and could well be the child of Edgar or George. See 1881 census under John Welham. In the 1881 samuel's second given name is Askew. There were Askews in Somersham in 1881 and this given name could well point to who the father was.Again in the 1861 census when Harriett was 4, lodging in the house were Frederick Askew age 23 and Thomas Askew age 19

In addition there are no civil registrations for the births of Samuel, Gertrude or Margaret Laffling. In fact in the 1901 census they are all listed as Welhams.
