About 1886 John and his wife Teresa moved to Glasscock Co., TX hoping for relief from his asthma.Miscellaneous
The following account of ranch life of the John Williamson family in Glasscock Co., TX was related to Roberta Blair Powell by Ida Williamson Shook at age 81. Mrs. Shook lived with the John Williamson family for awhile after his wife, Teresa, died. When John and Terresa moved to Glasscock Co., TX all of his married children except Julia Ann soon followed them. The family raised sheep and in the fall they drove them south to the Pecos River where Mexican herders took care of the herd. Once a month the Williamsons rode about 75 miles from their home to check on the sheep herd.
Provisions came from Big Springs about 25 miles from their home. They bought cases of canned goods, 100 lb. sacks of beans and flour, and sides of bacon. They had their own milk and butter.
In winter the women packed pounds of butter into kegs of salty water and buried them on the north side of the house. In the summer the butter was worked in fresh water to prepare it for eating.
Cooking was done on an open iron stove using cow chips and mesquite root as fuel. A windmill pumped water into a dirt tank for the stock and hauled to the house in barrels. The water was strained before human consumption.
The families lived in Garden City during the school term. In the spring the men brought the sheep back to the ranch and the women moved back there to do the cooking for the sheep shearers. Shearing the sheep took weeks. The wool was hauled to San Angelo in wagons where it was sold.
