Notes
Event-Misc
Dutton's stepfather, Job Evans, was a Quaker. Since Dutton was a teenager when his mother remarried he likely adopted the Quaker religion due to his stepfather's influence.Event-Misc
Dutton inherited 300 acres of his father's estate when he was still a teenager. His father's estate was named Browseley Hall.Event-Misc
Dutton's wife, Pretitia, and her sister, Mary, had inherited 500 acres in Baltimore Co., MD from their father. This property was on the Gunpowder River and called New Year's Purchase. This likely where Dutton and Pretitia first lived after their marriage. When Pretitia's sister, Mary, married Philip Dowell in 1702, they also lived on this property.
Event-Misc
Five years after Dutton's stepfather, Job Evans purchased 1000 acres called Friend's Discovery SE of present day Towson, MD Dutton received a grant for 300 acres, which he named Lane's Triangle. Lane's Triangle was near his stepfather's property.Event-Misc
For unknown reasons Dutton appears to be in financial trouble beginning on 7-19-1702 when he sold Browseley Hall to James Butler for 100 pounds sterling. Dutton and Pretitia deeded Burage and Burrage Blossom to their brother-in-law, Thomas Tench on 10-11-1703. At this time Lane's Triangle was in the possession of Samuel Lane, Sr.'s heirs and New Year's Purchase was possessed by Richard Tyding's heirs. In 1703 five law suits were brought against Dutton Lane. Four of the suits were by individuals and one by The Crown.
During 1704 Dutton conveyed all of his personal possessions to Benjamin Hooker. He then went to Carolina.
Event-Misc
By Jan., 1708 or 1709, Dutton and Pretitia sold their 250 acre part of New Year's Purchase to Thomas Hooker and Richard Guest. Will
His will indicates that he is in poor health and it mentions Dutton, Richard, and Samuel Lane, two daughters, Margrett and Sary, and his wife, Pretiosia Lane. Of the sons mentioned only Richard is specifically called a son in his will. His wife is named as sole Executrix.
Death
Date of death is the date of probation of his will which was written on 5-30-1716.Probate
Dutton's will was written in 1716 when he indicated he was in poor health but the will wasn't probated until 1726.On 10/8/1726 a statement was written on the back of Dutton's will by Wm. Holland that Philip Dowell and Alexander Rosenquist, two of the original witnesses to the will, testified that the will was the one made by Dutton Lane in 1716. Note that Pretitia who was named executrix was dead by the time the will was probated.
Hampton Court was willed to Sary and her sister, Margaret. This property was 100 acres located near Towson, MD. Since Sary and her sister were both minors at the time, the property was sold by their brother, Dutton Lane, Jr. to their brother, Richard in 1725. By 1747 this property and 100 acres of Lane's Triangle was included in the large estate of Charles Rigley, a Revolutionary War arms manufacturer. On this estate in the early 1790's he built Hampton Manor which is now a national monument.
