Jimmie F. Chatham, a family descendant, relates what happened to Hickmond and Caroline Slayton's children.Hickmond and Caroline both died when their children were still young. Hickmond's brother Sanford G. Slayton became the children's guardian and their grandmother Lucy Slayton helped raise them.
After the deaths of Sanford and Lucy, their aunt Augusta and her husband William J. Ferguson took care of Hickmond's children, but Augusta soon died and four years later her husband also died.
The children were then taken by their aunt and uncle Sarah and John Dorgan. It was too much for the Dorgans to raise the three youngest children so they were placed in the Buckner's Children's Home in Dallas.
"There weren't many social nets to catch children on the American frontier ... Most orphans lived with relatives, or neighbors took them in to have an extra hand around the place."
Two of the older children remained in the community. One daughter ran away from home when her father Hickmond died, and a son died soon after his father. Another daughter, Molly, married the day her father died.
