Lucy Shelton Slayton was born in Virginia based on the residences of her parents in Virginia at the probable time of her birth.Marriage
Lucy Slayden is mentioned as his daughter in Thomas Shelton's will.The Slayden surname spelling was later changed to Slayton.
The marriage of Lucy Shelton to Arthur Slayden, on 12-13-1796, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, is recorded in Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, 1767-1805, Catherine Lindsay Knorr, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 1956, p. 80.

Jimmie F. Chatham writes:"In Virginia, Lucy fought to get her sons released from the orphan's indentures after her husband's death. She was the heiress in an estate of considerable size. It was 15 years before she received her inheritance. Her sons knew first-hand what it meant to be from an affluent family but not to have access or be in control of the money."
Note: Sanford G. Slayton continued the cases to finalize Lucy's inheritance settlement from her father's estate until 3-3-1832.

Note: Sons Sanford and Thomas were bound to John W. Paxton and John Noble at this time.
They appear to be indicated on the 1820 Pittsylvania County census reports for these two gentlemen.
Miscellaneous
On 12-28-1839, Lucy Slayton received a Republic of Texas land grant certificate #510 for 640 acres of land. The certificate was issued by the Red River County Board of Land Commissioners, and Lucy Slayton is listed on the Republic of Texas Clerk Returns for Land Grants at Clarksville on 12-30-1839.Her land was claimed on 9-25-1847, in Collin County, after residing in Texas for at least three years. This land was on Pilot Grove Creek, about 16 miles NE of the town of McKinney.
The original survey was made on 1-14-1844, for Lucy Slayton; and she patented the land on 9-3-1850.
