Miscellaneous
James Calhoun Hill was a member of a surveying party commissioned by President John Tyler to survey what is now Smith County, Texas. He drove supplies to troops at Fort Smith, Arkansas during the Civil War, about a two hundred mile round trip.
During the Civil War he drove a wagon loaded with supplies and arms to Georgia. During the return trip he was blinded by a tree branch and driven back home by one of his slaves, who had accompanied him.
Another version of this story is from the Find A Grave Memorial for his son-in-law, Oakley Oyer Funderburgh, husband of Helen Marr Hill:
"Oakley was killed in the Civil War. This is an old family story that his wife's (Helen) father - James Calhoun Hill had paid for his release from the war due to Helen was overcome, however it was too late because Oakley was killed in battle. So, her father and a slave went to retrieve him for a proper burial. During the trip James got struck in his eyes with a tree limb that blinded him for balance of his life."
He surveyed the town of Tyler, Texas, where he became a city clerk and administrator.
He owned a large amount of land near Tyler, and owned about 100 slaves at the beginning of the Civil War.
After the Civil War, he donated a large amount of land for a railroad to be built to Tyler, Texas.
The Hill Rifle was manufactured in Tyler, Texas, although it is not known if James Calhoun Hill or his descendants were directly associated with the company.
