Miscellaneous
John Asaph Hill served in the 3rd Texas Calvary during the Civil War.John Asaph Hill and his brother Thomas Rusk Hill enlisted in Dallas on June 13, 1861. Both men served with the 3rd Texas Calvary, Company K, until the end of the Civil War.
John Asaph Hill was wounded in the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, and spent time in a field hospital recovering from his wounds; but he was able to rejoin his unit.
It is believed that both of the Hill brothers participated in the very last cavalry charge to ever take place on American soil, at the Battle of Franklin,Tennessee, in November, 1864, across the Harpeth River, under the immediate command of Brigadier General Sullivan Ross (Ross’ Brigade) with Ross’ superior officer being Cavalry Commander, General Nathan Bedford Forrest, giving the order to commence the charge. Forrest had somewhat defied the orders of General John Bell Hood, Commander of the Army of Tennessee, to launch his attack in the center of the line, and instead launched it against the left flank of the Union defenses, thus sparing his cavalry from certain death from successive artillery volleys of grape and canister. The 3rd Texas Cavalry, and John Asaph Hill, lived on.
It is very likely that the brothers were also participants during the sieges at Vicksburg and Atlanta. They definitely saw action in two of the very first battles of the Civil War in Missouri and in Arkansas, at Wilson Creek, Missouri (Bloody Hill), and at Pea Ridge, Arkansas (ElkhornTavern). Their brother-in-law, Oakley Oyer Funderburgh, was killed during the war, and his body was returned by wagon, to Smith County, TX, by James Calhoun Hill father of John Asaph Hill and Thomas Rusk Hill.
Upon the death of John Asaph Hill, his widow Narcisia filed for and received a “Confederate Pension.”
