Harry Alfred Batty Sr.

Harry Alfred Batty, Sr., of Charlottesville, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2008, at Martha Jefferson Hospital--the place of his birth. He was born on May 24, 1926, to the late Virginia and Harry Batty. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Harry attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree. He was a member of the Theta Tau engineering fraternity, PI Chapter. While at UVA, he met his future wife, Connie Wright. Connie and Harry were married for 60 years, spending 45 of those years in Lexington, Va. Connie preceded him in death by five months. Harry worked in the hydraulic department of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. in Virginia from 1949 to 1951. During his tenure, he helped design the hydraulic turbine system for the Hoover Dam. In 1951, Harry joined Lees Carpets in Glasgow, Va., which later became Burlington Industries. While there, he developed many patents, helped to build plants from Georgia to Japan, and rose to the position of Engineering Division Head for the Carpet Group. He retired in 1987. Harry was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lexington, where he served as lay leader and chairman of the Board of Trustees. In 1999, he became a member of the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni. Harry enjoyed cooking, reading and cheering on the UVA Cavaliers. He is survived by his three children, Debbie Batty Rickman and her spouse, of Lake Charles, La., Harry Alfred Batty, Jr. and his spouse, of Lake Norman, N.C., and Jennifer Ann Batty, of Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren, Will Duke and family, Hal Batty and family, Justin Duke and Frank Batty; a brother, Frank Batty; and numerous nieces and nephews. His sister was the late Edith Stevens. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Monticello Memory Gardens with the Rev. James B. Grimmer officiating. Hill and Wood is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 147 South Main Street, Lexington, Va., 24450 or to the charity of your choice.
