Individual Details
Matthew Isaac Agée
(1 Jan 1670 - Aft 1761)
The Agee or Age family is an established, proven Huegenot family. They appear to have entered at King William Parish, Henrico Co, VA and are on record there from 1710. The original parish records are in French & have been transcribed to English. An ancestory of unknown quality is on record with the Huegenot records. Executed deed, 16 Mar 1728, Matthew Agee of St. James Parish, Goochland & Peter Bruce of same, 130 acres of land on south side of James River bound by Jones Creek, Givodan's line, Antoine (Anthony) Rapine. Stephen Monford & Thomas Turpin witness. Anne, wife of Matthew, relinquishes dower. Executed deed 11 June 1728, Matthew Agee of Goochland to John Smith, 100 acres in St. James Parish, south side James River bound by Edward Maxey, Francis James, Peter Fore & other lands of Matthew Agee. Wit. Thomas Turpin, Peter Bruce & Obedience Turpin. Anne, wife of Agee, relinquishes dower. Deed of 15 Feb 1731, Matthew Agee of Goochland to John James Flourney of Henrico, Gent., 570 acres, residue of 875 acre grant to Matthew Agee by 2 patents, dated 13 Jan 1725. 135 acres of land devised to Peter Bruce & 100 acres to John Smith (note: 100 + 135 or 130 + 570 does not equal 875 acres. Math was a bit lax here. It is, however, itemized this way in the deed, so apparently the clerk didn't bother to add the amounts up & check the total OR this is not the entire residue of the grant & Matthew retained 70-75 acres for himself). Bound by Matthew Branch, Edward Maxey, Francis James, Peter Fore & other lands of Matthew Agee. Signed Matthew (M) Agee (he apparently could not read/write). Witnesses Giles Allegre, Antoine Rapine. Anne, wife, relinquishes dower. In the Vestry Book of King William Parish, Henrico Co, VA, a Huegenot parish. Tithes for 1710-1713, 1717-1720, In 1723, paid on Thomas Preouet, 1724-1731. In 1735, paid on Anthoiny and Mathieu Age, paid 3 tithes in 36-38. Either he or his son Matthew is on record in Goochland Co, VA (along with the Ashford Hughes group) in the will of Henry Baley of King William Parish, Goochland Co, VA (probably the same parish as before -- need to check on incorporation history of Goochland & see if it comes from Henrico Co, VA), dated 7 July 1735. Baley references a tract of 200 acres he owns on Chastain's Branch on south side of James River 'where Matthew Age lives', this land being legacy to son William Smith. A Deed, dated 20 Apr 1742, from Peter David of King Wm Parish, Goochland to Stephen Mallet of same, land on south side of James River on Swift Creek, bound by Mathew Age, Nathaniel Maxsay & others. On 1744 Goochland Co, VA Tithes List, Matthew Agee, James Agee, Francis Hilyard & Alexander Edins (last two probably work hands). Son Anthony is listed as head of house with 1 tithe paid. Residents of King William Parish. On 1748 Goochland Co, VA Tithes List, Matthew Agee, James Agee, Isaac Agee. Also son Anthony Agee is listed in abstract as Anthony Matthew Agee as head of household with 1 tithe. If both names actually appear on the tithe list, then this would document Anthony Agee's middle name. It seems unlikely, though, since his brother was named Matthew, but it is not impossible (note: the tithes lists are intermittent and not all lists survive. The years 1744-1748 are not complete & only fragments exist prior to 1740.) Notation states his will dated 11 May 1745, proven 1751. Married Ann Godwin, dau of Isaac Godwin. Not clear if this is Cumberland or Goochland County from my notes -- need to recheck. Have not obtained a copy of this document at this time. ******** A line of the Agees went to Franklin Co, VA (where the Ellison/Allison family is). It is not clear which son this branch is off of originally. The family name of Ephraim though is carried down. Ephraim Agee m. Elizabeth Dunn, 6 Apr 1801 Isaac Agee m.
