Individual Details

Matthew Elzy Henderson

(1801 - 1886)

Matthew and his family moved from West Virginia to Crawford County, Oliver Springs Community during the early 1820's. Matthew deeded each of his four sons a farm. Will Henderson received the farm on which Oliver Springs Cemetery is located. Later the same farm was owned by Cy Carney of Fayetteville, great grandson of Matthew.

1860 Census. Matthew was in Cedar Creek Township. He was 58, b. VA. Mary was 50, also b. VA. William J., Martha E. are still at home. So is Matthew L. age 13 - this name is plainly Matthew, not Nathan. All b. in VA. There is also a small girl, surely a grandchild, age 3, whose name might be Halcion E. Henderson, b. AR. Asa Henderson, age 49, Master Carpenter also born in VA would likely be a brother of Matthew's.

VAN BUREN PRESS, 24 Dec 1872. Loyal Claims which have been favorably reported on in the county included Mathew Henderson $226.
