Hans Jost Hite

(5 Dec 1685 - 1761)

Jost was baptised as Hans Justus; name also seen as Johann Jost.

Other references state that he went from Strassburg, the main city of Alsace to Holland where he married Ann Maria DuBois.

Johan Justus Heyd, linenweaver and son of Johannis Heyd the butcher married Anna Maria, daughter of Abraham Merckle, citizen here, on 11 Nov 1704. [Bonfeld, Wuerttenburg, Germany]

Joist Hite came to America about 1709; only Jost, wife Anna Maria, baby Mary & Jost's stepmother arrived.
A list of "Emigrants from this Village" made by the pastor of the Bonfeld church listed in 1710: Johannes Heyd with his family, Justus Heyd, his son with his family. In 1717 was Abraham Merckle with wife, five children and his son-in-law Hans Jerg Popp with his wife, and Balthasar Merckle. The list was made out some years after their leaving and probably the date 1710 is approximate. The Hunter Subsistence List of 4 Aug 1710 has Maria Hayd, Joist's stepmother, likely the surviving widow.
Joost Heyt, wife and 1 child were on Capt William Newton's ship in the 5th party of Palatines in Holland in 1709; listed next to Simon Vet & Hans Michel Wechel, both also of Bonfeld.

The Hunter Subsistence Lists enrolled Johann Jost Hayd on 30 Jun 1710 and 4 Aug 1710.

In September of 1713, Jost Hite was living in New York when Magdalena was baptized in Kingston. By May 1414, he had purchased 150 acres on the Skippack from Johannes Kolb. [Philadelpha Co DB F, Vol II, p.48] Son John was likely the first child born in Pennsylvania.

Hite next purchased land on the Perkiomen where he could build a grist mill. His deed of sale for the land lists him as Hans Yost Height, Weaver.

Hans Joest Heyt and wife Anna Maria sold land in PA to her brother Jacob Merckley in 1728.

5 Aug 1731, Hite acquired rights from John & Isaac Vanmeter for 40,000 acres in the Shenandoah Valley which they had obtained on 17 Jun 1730. He moved his family and maybe as many as 15 other families to the Valley in the fall of 1731. They had to make many of their own roads to proceed. [There is a tradition that he was with Alexander Spotswood and his "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" when they explored this area in 1716, but I doubt this is true]

Families said to have gone with Hite in 1732 were his sons-in-law, George Bowman, Jacob Chrisman & Paul Froman. Also Robert McKay, Robert Green, William Duff, and Peter Stephens.
