Samuel Sheperd Duval

( - Bef 9 May 1825)

Samuel was a Major in the Revolution, somtimes listed as Co. Sheperd DuVal.

He apparently had difficulty with money, as a codicil to his father's Will dated 23 Aug 1783, the father revised his will so that the estate bequeathed to Samuel was to be given to his brothers William and Claiborne in trust to permit Samuel to enjoy the profits for the support of him and his children but not to be liable for the payment of his debts.

Apparently, Anne and Samuel separated when Archibald was about four years old. She married Col. Joseph Cabell, as his second wife, on 31 Oct 1804. Samuel, along with his two boys, followed his brother Claiborne to Logan Co KY. He lived nearby in Todd Co where his will was proved 9 May 1825.

His will freed two slaves, the old man Samuel and his wife Fanny. Daniel S. Dunscomb had paid several sums of money for him and in consequence he gave him possession of the slave Louis. To Daniel S. Dunscomb and Samuel S. DuVall, all his real estate to be disposed of in payment of debts. They are appointed Executors and to make equal distribution to Elizabeth Price, Daniel S. Dunscomb, Samuel S. DuVal, Archibald B. Duval, and Samuel D. Dunscomb's heirs.
Codicil, 1825, Having omitted to devise to daughter Lucy Claiburn Harding and Nancy Dunscomb [widow of Samuel DuVal Dunscomb], $25 each. He also omitted to give to Margaret Louisa Harding her proportion. Signed: Samuel DuVal.
