Individual Details
Stephen Holtzclaw
(Abt 1770 - 24 Sep 1841)
Married Ailse Green in Fauquier County on 28 Nov 1791. He was living in Greenville Co SC by 1809 when he purchased 240 acres. He is present in the 1810 census with 10 children.
In the 1820 Census one of his neighbors is his mother-in-law Elizabeth Underwood Green. He was a member of the Brushy Creek Baptist Church at least as early as 1821 and was dismissed in good standing Feb 1833 to help found Pleasant Grove Bapt Church.
In Oct 1841, George & Ethel Holtzclaw were appointed administrators of Stephen's estate. In 1849, an equity suit was filed by some of the other heirs. Five sons - Peter, Danile & Jesse had been gone 7 years in 1843 and Archibald & Elias, 5 years, had moved to the West and not been heard from in some time and the remaining heirs wanted to disperse their shares. The names of the children have come from the documents of this suit.
Notices were placed in "The Greenville Mountaineer" and the "Texas Democrat" which was published near Austin, notifying the five sons that they would be presumed dead and without issue and their shares distributed to the remaining heirs.
