ELIZABETH ?DURLAND/DARLING/DOWLING

(Abt 1730 - Bef May 1797)

Books and online references make a case for Elizabeth, wife of Gideon, and Catherine, wife of Hezekiah, as sisters, daughters of Charles [Karel] Dunland/Dorlandt of New York. A book on THE DORLAND FAMILY IN AMERICA, by John Dorland Cremer, 1898, seems to indicate this is not possible. There was an immigrant from Holland, Jan Gerretse Dorlandt, that came to Brooklyn. One of his sons was Gerret/Gerretse Dorlandt who married (1) Cornelia DeBeauvoise in New Amersterdam, and (2) Gertrude Aukes Van Nuys about 1675 in Brooklyn. There are six known children of whom the eldest Charles [Karel] was born in Flatbush and might have been the only child of the first wife. However, Charles did not live in Oyster Bay where Elizabeth & Catherine supposed to have lived - his residence was in Jamaica NY where his children were baptized. He did have a daughter Elizabeth, baptized at Jamaica on 25 Mar 1727, but he apparently had no Catherine. Charles had a brother John who did live in Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY. John married Mary Birdsall and they did have a daughter Anna who married Elijah Wright; she was baptized 27 Jul 1722; Anna & Elizjah Wright lived in Norwich. Their other daughters are listed as Cornelia, Mary and Mercy. However, there is a confusing footnote that remarks on the duplication of names among the children of John & Mary of Oyster Bay and the children of their sons Charles of Orange Co and Daniel of Nova Scotia. This footnote says all three families had a Catherine, but no Catherine was given as a daughter of John and Mary in the list of their children on the page. The footnote goes on to state that their were two of these families that had an Elizabeth, but again the list of John and Mary has no Elizabeth. Granddaughters of John and Mary would likely be too young for consideration.
Since it has been proved that Gideon & Hezekiah Wright were NOT descended from the Oyster Bay Wrights in the first place, it also seems doubtful that the Durland sisters would have been from Oyster Bay. I know of no proof that the ladies were sisters and not all references agree that this was the case.
