Natural Dam, one of the first settlements in Crawford County, was appropriately named after the distinctive natural scenic features of a solid bed of limestone, six to eight feet thick, which stretches across the width of Mountain Fork Creek to form a natural barrier to the descent of water that flows down the stream a short distance from where it enters Lee's Creek
W. T. Larrimore first settled in 1817 and build first mill on the west side of the dam. The book says some remains of this mill are today. He sold the mill in 1838 to son-in-law, Andrew Morton and Washington DuVal. A post office was established by the name of Lee's Creek in 1832 with George Duval being appointed to serve 27 Dec.1838. It was then called Lee Creek.
The name was changed 6 Mar 1839 to Natural Dam and the following were appointed over the post office: Washington Duval, 6 Mar 1839; Andrew Morton 1 Nov 1845; Washington Duvall 31 Jan 1846 (notice the spelling)
In 1880's, Mr. Boyd built a grist mill between the old and new settlement. Also he built a cotton gin but they were washed away with the flood of 1883

Of Natural Dam. Possibly related to the other Mortons in Crawford Co. but relationship unknown so far. It has been suggested he was another sons of Richard Morton and Nancy Tanner or Mary Noland. But his mother was said to be a Cochran???
"History of Crawford County" states that Andrew Morton settled in the Natural Dam area in 1828, coming from Illinois. He was postmaster in 1845 and again in 1850.
Andrew was on the 1840 Census in Crawford Co.
The 1850 Census has the oldest daughter Martha born in Illinois in 1832, the rest of the children born in Arkansas. There are two Wilcox children living with the family - John, age 17, and Jane, age 13, both born in Arkansas. If the census ages are correct, Andrew was 11 years older than his wife - these possibly could be his grandchildren from an earlier marriage, or stepchildren.

1850 Census. Lee's Creek, Crawford Co AR. Hh 52
Andrew Morton, age 55, b. SC. Elizabeth, 42, b. TN
Martha A. age 18, only child born in Illinois
Children born in Arkansas: Nancy 17, Jesse 12, William 10, Mary 7, James 5.
George Biers, 19, laborer, b. AR
John Wilcox, 17, laborer, b. AR and Jane Wilcox, 13, laborer, b. AR.

1860 Census. Lee's Creek Township. Andrew was 63, b. SC. Elizabeth was 53, b. TN. Martha Cunningham, age 29 [probably a widowed dau back home] b. Arkansas, as were all the others. Mary age 27, James, 12, Alice 10. Jesse Morton age 22 and Elvira age 15 were in the next household.

There may be another daughter that lived in Crawford Co. Buried Gill Cemetery, Crawford Co. is Lucinda Greig, nee Morton, born Jackson Co, Illinois, with the dates 1826-1903. Her husband James Grieg, born Ayar, Scotland is buried next to her as well as William Wallace Greig, 1856-2917, probably a son and his wife Mary Frances (Kibler) Greig.
In 1850, I found this blended household also in Lee's Creek - household 63.
Hugh Flyn, age 46, b. Ireland. Martha, 44, b. Virginia. Children born in Arkansas, Robert 6 and John 3.
James Greig, age 35, b. Scotland. Lucinda, age 24, b. Ill. Children born in Arkansas: Agnes 3, Betsy age 6 months.
Sally Wilcox, age 12, b. AR.
In 1860, still living in Lee's Creek, the Greigs had added the following children: Jno. H. age 5, William 3, and Martha age 1. Agnes was now 11 and Betsy 8.

The Wilcox children living with the Mortons and Greigs in 1850, might be grandchildren of Andrew & Elizabeth Morton.

There might have been still another daughter as well. A Maggie Morton Carter, dau. of A. E. Morton, is buried Hall Cemetery with the dates, 1830-1914. However, I've never seen Andrew with a middle initial and cannot find any further indication - a widowed Margaret Carter in 1860, was born in Tennessee.
