According to "History of Albemarle Co VA", George was a "Louisa man" but lived for a time in Milton, Albemarle Co before removing to Mississippi.
Went to Mississippi in 1802. In 1803 appointed Attorney General of the Territory. He was an aide to Gen. Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans and a territorial delegate to Congress from 1807 to 1813. 2nd governor of Mississippi from 1819 to 1821 and one of the writers of the state constitution. U. S. Senator from MS from 1831-1835. Buried at Jackson, MS.
Middle name of Lyttleton not certain, but son George Lyttleton signed his named as George Jr.

One source about the Jones family suggests that George was also married to a Molly Cosby - however, I believe this to be a confusion with his sister Molly who had married Garland Cosby and whose children received a bequest in their grandfather Poindexter's will. Lydia Carter possibly the mother of his children. He married 14 May 1832 to Ann Hewes, in Washington DC.

POINDEXTER, George, a Delegate, a Representative and a Senator from Mississippi; born in Louisa County, Va., in 1779; had a sporadic education; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced practice in Milton, Va.; moved to the Territory of Mississippi in 1802 and practiced law in Natchez; attorney general of the Territory; member, Territorial general assembly 1805; elected as a Delegate from Mississippi Territory to the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Congresses (March 4, 1807-March 3, 1813); United States district judge for the Territory 1813-1817; served in the War of 1812; upon the admission of Mississippi as a State into the Union was elected to the Fifteenth Congress and served from December 10, 1817, to March 3, 1819; chairman, Committee on Public Lands (Fifteenth Congress); Governor of Mississippi 1819-1821; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1820 to the Seventeenth Congress and in 1822 to the Eighteenth Congress; appointed in 1830 to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert H. Adams; subsequently elected, and served from October 15, 1830, to March 3, 1835; unsuccessful candidate for reelection; served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Twenty-third Congress; chairman, Committee on Private Land Claims (Twenty-second Congress), Committee on Public Lands (Twenty-third Congress); moved to Kentucky and resumed the practice of his profession in Lexington; returned to Jackson, Miss., and continued the practice of law until his death on September 5, 1853; interment in Jackson Cemetery.

George Poindexter was Chairman of the Committee on Public Lands, Senate. He made petition for the committee to inquire into the circumstances of recent land sales in Mississippi and Alabama. To determine if fraudulent practices took place regarding the districts recently acquired from the Choctaw Tribes by the treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek and from the Creek tribe. Whether or not there was fair competition between bidders; whether any of the receivers of public moneys accepted bonuses or premiums; whether any of the lands were sold other than for case. The committee to have power to send for persons & papers, to take depositions, and examine witnesses.
In one of the depositions, McKinney Holderness was listed as a person that subscribed to one of the companies and received land.
