Individual Details

Richard P. Haden

(22 Sep 1783 - 17 Feb 1864)

Left out of father's will along with Hendley.

May be Richard P. Haden according to Elizabeth "Beth" Haden. Richard "D." in Jouett Bible Record.

Richard's birth is given as 22 Sep 1783 in the Jouett Bible, which works out well with the fact his father married Mary Crenshaw in 1781. A Bible found copied on the Haden@rootsweb.com mail list, gave his date of birth as 22 Sep 1778, which seems unlikely. However, it appears that 1783 was rubbed out. There is enough matching data that I don't believe this was two different Richards.

The Haden Bible also gives the date of marriage to Lucy Goode as 31 Aug 1803. Perhaps the 30th Aug found was the date of the bond.

Email of Peggy Chapman dated 28 Jul 2000:
Lipscomb Torian b. 1801-1805 Halifax Co VA, d. c1874, McCracken Co KY married abt 1824 to Mary Hayden believed to be daugter of Richard Haden & Lucy Goode. Torian migrated from Halifax to Trigg Co 1838, Christian Co by 1855 & MacCracken for the 1870 census. Richard Haden bought items at estate sale of George Torian in Christian Co KY 1 Mar 1827.

The Bible record discovered shows that Richard Potress [Peatross?] Haden and Sarah Wade were married 17 Dec 1817.

In 1820, a Richd. D. Haden was in the Albemarle Co VA census. He had a male child under 10, and one age 16-18; he himself was listed as over age 45 [he would have been about age 37]. There were 2f under 10, 1f 10-16, 1f 16-26, and 1f age 26-45. He listed a single female slave. I do not know if this is the same man, but it is the only Richard Haden of near this age among the descendants of Anthony Haden.

The 1830 census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co KY lists a Richard P. Haden, age 40-50 with a young male age 10-15 in his household. The females were 2 girls age 15-20 and a lady age 30-40. Richard's brother James and half-brother Nathan also are found in Christian Co in 1830.

1850 Census. There were two Richard Hadens of the right age, but neither works out too well. One was in Shelby Co, AL. He was 68, born in Virginia. Living with Samuel Acton, age 56, b. NC. Tealpha, 50, b. TN. and several others from ages 30 to 7, all born in Alabama.
Another Richard Haden was living in Crittenden Co KY - the location would make this man more likely. He was listed as Richard P. Hayden, age 70, b. VA. He was in the household of John J. Cowset, age 30, b. KY. Jane Cowset, age 60, b. TN. Nancy J., 8, b. KY. J. J. C. [male] age 6, b. KY. Johnson, age 5, b. KY.

The bible record states that Richard P. Haden married Nancy Rogers, widow of Peter Rogers, dec'd. 29 Oct 1854. The marriage record as found in the Illinois Marriage Database online agrees.

I did not find him in 1860, nor could I find the Cowset family. The Torians were still in Kentucky, but in Christian County.
