Individual Details

John Haden

(25 Jan 1772 - 22 Sep 1842)

Date of the marriage of John and Rachel may be the date of the bond. Consent by Isaac Reynolds, father of the bride. Bond: Samuel Terrell, John Haden. Married 17 Jan 1793 by Menoah Lesley.

Campbell Co VA Deed Book 3
5 Sep 1793 Robert Brown & Mary his wife to John Haden Jr of Campbell Co about 214 acres on Seneca Creek, bounded by David Terrell Sr on said Creek, Phelps old road to Anthony Haden, John Condry, John Dabney, to the beginning. Being land Thomas Luster now lives on, former property of Benjamin Gilbert and & George Vest. Signed: Robert Brown, Mary (x) Brown. Rec. 5 Sep 1793
John's grandfather of the same name had moved to Campbell Co about 1784, that would explain the use of the "Jr" after this John's name. The Browns and Vests are also mentioned in deeds of Anthony Haden, John's father. Benjamin Gilbert was a brother to Charles Gilbert that had married John's older sister Jenny Haden.

The family went to Madison County KY, before going on to Ralls County MO. Daughter Amelia married in 1817 while they were in Madison County. John served as Bondsman for the marriage of Elizabeth Duncan, daughter of Edward Duncan, to John Wood. Bond dated 28 Nov 1809; Returned on 2 Dec. Also bondsman for the marriage of Nancy Austin to Francis Wood, 11 Dec 1815.

Children who moved to Pike Co MO: Tyre, Benjamin, William, Turner, Hendley, Nathan, Elizabeth
Children who remained in KY: Samuel G., Amelia, John M., Elizabeth, Avarilla, Silas

1810 Madison Co KY Census, p.216: John Hayden, 4m -10 [Hendley, Turner, William, Benjamin], 1m 10-16 [John], 1m 16-26 [should have been two in this column - Samuel & Tyre], 2m 26-45 [John, age 38]; 1f age 16-26 [Amelia] and 1f +45 [Rachel, but in the wrong column, she was 36].

1820 Madison Co KY Census, p.110:
John Haydon: 2m -10 [Nathan & Silas]; 3m 10-16 [Hendley, Turner, William]; 2m 16-26 Benjamin & John M.]; 1m 45+ [John]; 3f -10 [Elizabeth & Avarila & ???]; 1f 26-45 [???]; 1f 45+[Rachel] [Tyre already gone to Missouri]

1830 Ralls Co MO, Spencer Twp. 1m 10-15 [Nathan], 1m 15-20 [Hendly], 2m 20-30 [Turner and ?] 1m age 50-60 [John] 1f 10-15 [Avarilla] and 1f 15-20 [Elizabeth], 1f age 50-60 [Rachel]
[Did not find them listed in 1840]

This family is well documented in the "John Haden of Virginia" book.

John and Rachel are buried in what is called the John Haden Cemetery, Pike Co. MO, near the intersection of Ralls Road & Beailey Bridge Road. Presumably the cemetery is located on their place. Unfortunately a document linked to Pike County on USGenWeb lists the wrong father for John Haden, stating he was the son of William Haden of Culpepper Co - he was not a son of William, nor was he or his father ever from Culpepper Co. The birth year on his stone - 1769 - does not agree with family Bible records as 1772.
