Arthur Bates, 42, was killed late at night in an accident on Highway 63 one mile north of Renick. He was hurled from his horse as two Brown Shoe Co. trucks passed, scaring the horse and causing it to rear. A third truck carrying federal supplies ran over the man's body and also hit the horse. It was a foggy night with drizzling rain, and the third truck driver said he did did not see the bodies in time to stop. A Coroner's inquest was held, but the cause of the man's death was not determined. Arthur Bates was the father of four children.
