John Proctor

(Abt 1785 - 11 Jun 1847)

I believed at first this John, son of Hezekiah, had married Betsy McIntosh in Logan Co in 1811, and that seems likely. It appears that John Proctor went to Illinois with the McIntosh family about 1814 and did not remain in Logan Co. That could be this John, son of Hezekiah Proctor. There are no subsequent entries in the Logan Co KY records between a young John and Hezekiah, nor between John and the other sons of Hezekiah. Sons Charles and George and James had various transactions and all lived in the same area - John doesn't appear. John was evidently the eldest son - although he was left $1 as he already had his mother's share from the estate of his grandfather, John Young. - Hezekiah did not make him one of the executors of his will. Perhaps a indication John was not living in Logan Co.

Elizabeth/Betsy McIntosh was apparently the daughter and 4th child of John Og McIntosh:

4th ELIZABETH McINTOSH was born in Mason or possibly Bourbon Co., Ky, July 11th, 1790. After arriving at maturity, she was united in marriage with John Proctor of her native state, February 14th 1811. They came with the McIntosh family to Illinois in the year 1814. John Proctor was born June 27th, 1787. He was a wheelwright by trade and also carried on farming. He died in Wabash Co., Il. June 11th, 1847. Elizabeth Proctor, his wife, died in Wabash Co., Il., May 5th, 1867. They had a family of eight children. Their names were as follows: John M., Frances, Lucinda, Mary, Thomas, Sarah, Wilford and a daughter that died in early infancy. Two only of the family are now living, Sarah McCrary in Grayville, Il. and Wilford in Vincennes, Ind.

Wabash county was not formed until 1824 - from Edwards Co IL
John Proctor and his father-in-law were in Edwards in 1820:
1820, Edward, IL: John Proctor has 1m -10, 1m age 26-45; 3f -10, 1f 26-45
John McIntosh was also there: 1m 10-16, 1m 16-18, 2m 16-26, 1m over 45 and 1f over 45.
1830, Wabash, IL: John Proctor: 1m -5 (Wilford), 1m 5-10, 1m 15-20, 1m 40-50; 1f under 5 (Sarah), 2f 10-15, 1f 15-20 and 1f age 30-40
1840, Wabash, IL: John Proctor: 1m 10-15, 1m 15-20, 1m 50-60; 1f 10-15, 1f 20-30, 1f 40-50
John Proctor Jr: 1m -5, 1m 20-30; 1f 20-30

In 1850 in Wabash, Hh 144 is
Elizabeth Proctor, 59.
Sarah 25, Wilford, 23, and Phebe C., age 9 (probably a grandchild)
In 1860 - Elizabeth Procter, age 70, was living in Edwards Co IL, with her married daughter Sarah McCreary.

It is unlikely that John was head of a household in 1810, yet it cannot be ruled out because two Johns were in Logan Co. Another John Proctor married Betsy Furbush in 1815. Since we don't know positively when either John was born, it is possible either of them had an earlier marriage - and the John who married Betsy Furbush was likely married first to Eleanor Offutt.
In 1810, there were two John Proctors in Logan Co, but the households don't really fit any known John Proctor - ages of the head of household, as well as some of the children don't fit what is known about the two Johns who married the two Betseys, as they were both born say 1784-1787. However the John who was married to Eleanor Offutt, then Betsey Furbush could have been just about age 26 in 1810..
One John: 2m -10, 1m 10-16, 1m 26-45; 1f -10, 1f 16-26, 2 slaves. Maybe an older John, the brother of Benjamin, Hezekiah & Thomas - if so, he possibly has a younger spouse. But he isn't really old enough to be the John claimed to be their brother.
Another John: 1m -10, 1m 16-26; 2f -10, 1f 26-45, 2 slaves. The male age 16-26, could have been placed in the wrong category - or perhaps exactly age 26.

Or did Hezekiah's son John marry Betsy Furbush in 1815? I have come to believe it is most likely that the John who married Betsy Furbush, was first married to Eleanor Offutt in Jessamine Co in 1804- then came to Logan with her brother. There isn't a John Proctor in the 1810 census in Jessamine Co that makes any sense either and other Johns are known to have been in Jessamine. Eleanor apparently died after the birth of a fourth child about 1814, early 1815. Later records show this John with a wife Elizabeth.
