Individual Details
Sarah Maria Doughty
(1842 - 7 Sep 1881)
Maria was buried "in Bluff Cemetery, Dakota, Minnesota, high above and overlooking the broad, beautiful Mississippi River, and just across the river from La Crosse."
Born near Indianapolis, daughter of Robert E. Doughty and Lydia Adams. Died of tuberculosis at age 39.
As "Sarah M. Doughty," she married 29 May 1861 at Dresbach, Winona, Minnesota, James W. Young (born 25 Dec 1837 Canada West [now southern Ontario, Canada]; died 7 Jan 1919 La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin; son of John Young [born about 1783-90 VT/NH] and Eliza (Owen ?) Young [born about 1801 in ME]). James W. and Maria had one child, Robert John Young.
[From family history book (1967) by one of Maria's granddaughters, Rosina Maria "Marie" (Young) Widdifield, and a few other sources. Marie gave "Wilson" as the middle name of James W. Young. She once had a snapshot of Maria's grave marker. The inscription (below) was sent to her by "Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Bateman who cared for the cemetery." They also sent her "Biography of James W Young" from History of Winona County (Chicago: H.H. Hill, 1883), pp. 729-31; now online]
Bluff Cemetery is also known as Brown Cemetery. Compare these two accounts:
"The first persons that died at Dakota and were buried in Bluff Cemetery were: Mrs. Eliza A. Brown, first wife of Nathan Brown, and infant of the same. Mrs. Brown died July 21, 1854, child August 16, 1854." [from "Buried in Dakota Cemetery," History of Winona County (1883, now online), p. 568]
"Nathan Brown was the first burial within this cemetery. The exact date is not known other than it was prior to 1854. The first recorded burial was Mrs. Eliza Brown - Nathan's wife - who died on July 21, 1854. Her infant was the second recorded burial - the baby dying on August 16, 1854." [from "Cemetery notes and/or description" for Brown Cemetery (below) "Also known as: Dakota Cemetery"]
