Lawrence "Larry" Girdner Dayton, age 89, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Lawrence was born the son of Charles R. and Edna M. (Gay) Dayton on October 20, 1923, in Chillicothe, Missouri. He was a 1941 graduate of Chillicothe High School. Lawrence served in the United States Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Genevieve "Jean" R. Glauser on September 15, 1946, in Chillicothe, Missouri. She survives of the home. Lawrence worked as a meat cutter for Singer Locker in Chillicothe, where he retired from in 1988. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Chillicothe, Missouri. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #25, former manager of the American Legion Baseball Team, the Men's Democratic Club, the Hutchinson Cemetery Association Board of Directors, Chillicothe Booster Club, and the "Chain Gang", which was a 3 man team that provided yard markings for the Chillicothe High School football home and championship games. Lawrence was on the Chillicothe City Council in 1965, where he served 4 consecutive terms.
Lawrence was widely known for his love of sports and his children. He volunteered many hours as a coach for his children's baseball and softball programs. He also spent many hours umpiring American Legion Baseball games.
Survivors include his wife, Genevieve of the home; three daughters, Pamela S. Gibson and husband Merle of Wheeling, Missouri, Linda Brightwell and husband Sam of Richardson, Texas, and Lori A. Clark and husband Ronald of Portland, Oregon; nine grandchildren, Dayton Brightwell of Rowlett, Texas, Amy Lovett of Wylie, Texas, Jason Gibson of Windermere, Florida, Danny Gibson of Roeland Park, Kansas, Amanda Kennedy of Meadville, Missouri, Drew Gibson of Brooklyn, New York, Nathan Clark, Hunter Clark, and Caleb Clark all of Portland, Oregon; ten great grandchildren, Samantha Brightwell and Ryan Brightwell of Forney, Texas, Emily Lovett, Hannah Lovett, and Justin Lovett of Wylie, Texas, Cayla Kennedy, Devyn Kennedy, and Eli Kennedy of Meadville, Missouri, Grace Gibson and Nora Gibson of Windermere, Florida; one brother, Russell Dayton of Cameron, Missouri; one sister, Emma Ponclet of Chillicothe, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Glen Dayton, Charles Dayton, and Ed Dayton; six sisters, Garnet Whitacre, Nora Shearer, Elsie Hall, Nigel Seidel, Millie Dayton, and Mary Crookshanks; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. A scheduled family visitation will be held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Friday, July 26, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Friday, July 26, 2013, from 12 noon until 9:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Chillicothe, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Christ and/or the Ronald McDonald House and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Missouri 64601.
