William Gheen

In Conquerors of the West: Stalwart Mormon Pioneers, Vols. 1-2, William Gheen arrived in Company E, Moses M. Markham Company in 1849. He was born 27 Feb1812 in Goshen, PA. He had married Aseneth Harmon in 1841 when he was 29. He died 19 Aug 1852 in Sacramento, CA. His father was Joseph Gheen; his mother Hannah Osborne.

William 's parents were Quakers from Pennsylvania . After his marriage to Aseneth , they lived for a time in Indianapolis, Indiana , where their first child was born, but died. After their next child, a girl, was born, they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois . There was also another man by the same name, William Gheen , who lived in Nauvoo at the same time. William was a 1st captain in the Nauvoo Legion and fought in the battle of September 11th and 12th, 1846 . Following the battle he was baptized into the Church. His wife refused to be baptized until they could get to the Valley. In 1847 , William moved his family to Savanna, Missouri . He was a hotel keeper and prospered. In 1849 , the family crossed the plains and settled in Salt Lake . He opened a butcher shop on Main Street and Broadway. People wanted the meat but had little money to buy. Discouraged, William went alone to California . In 1851 , his wife and eight-year-old daughter were baptized and then went by stage to Sacramento, California , to join William . There on the bank of the Sacramento River , he established a hotel. He always said he would die at 40, and he did. He was buried on Mormon Island in the Sacramento River .
