John Sargent Porter

(26 Apr 1826 - 16 Jun 1876)

John said to have married Sarah Borland. The marriage record on FamilySearch, gives the date of 26 Sep 1849, Shelby Co KY; the bride was Sarah J. Bowland; her father William D. Bowland. In a census the surname was spelled Bouland.

She is said to have died, but no date given. John died 16 Jun 1876. Children listed in the Porter book as Christopher Ball Porter, died in infancy - John's sister had married a Christopher Ball - and daughters Mary Bean and Martha.

There's a daughter Martha, born March 1, 1855, shown to John Porter and Sarah nee Bowland in Shelby County, Kentucky in the Kentucky marriage records.

There is a copy of his re-enlistment documents with his own signature, front and back, pages 28 & 29 and 30 & 31.  One of these is very clear, the other blurred.  I though at first it was a retake, but they are different. One of these documents nicely solves the problem of what John did for a living, in spite of the different spellings of census enumerators. He stated his occupation as that of Printer.
Physical description was grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion, five feet, ten inches tall.

I found this in 1870. Tates Precinct, Casey Co KY, Hh 240
