MARY JANE DOYLE-SHADWICK-LUMAN FAMILY
The Origin of the Shadwick Family in the Heavener Area submitted by Pat Shadwick Johnson
Mary Jane Doyle Shadwick Luman, who was originally from West Plains, Missouri, came to the Hodgens area in the late 1890's with her second husband, Alec Luman. Her first husband, Thomas Shadwick, had drowned in the Petit Jean River in Arkansas, leaving her with two small children, William, born March 4, 1984, and Annie, born March 11, 1889. Annie married David C. Smith in 1906. She died in 1912 leaving two children, Thomas and Hester.
On July 28, 1905, William married Bertha Ann Kelley, born July 23, 1891, daughter of Dee Kelley and Laura Curtis. Laura was born August 4, 1866 to Nancy Reeves, born 1843 in Illinois and William Henry Curtis, born 1839 in Illinois. Henry Curtis was a veteran of the Union Army.
William and Bertha Ann Shadwick had six sons, J.C. "Clint", Clayton, Clifton, Melvin, Ernest, and Billy Joe. They also had two daughters, Opal Shadwick Baxter and Reba "Johnnie" Shadwick Caudell. Ernest, Billy Joe and "Johnnie" Caudell are still living in the Heavener area.
Clint Shadwick, born September 28, 1906, was a well-known auctioneer and livestock dealer in this area. As a teenager he joined up with "Texas Jack's Wild West Show" as a bronc buster. This was a short-lived experience as homesickness took over. This was the only time he ever lived out of the area.
Clint and his son, L.D. "Hotshot" were well known as livestock dealers and owner/operators of the LeFlore County Livestock Auction in Wister.
On August 16, 1923, Clint Shadwick married Lettie Mae Hickman. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary shortly before her death on January 2, 1984.
Clint died January 4, 1991. They are buried in the Wister Cemetery, Wister, Oklahoma. They were the parents of J.M. "Smokey" Shadwick, Mildredd Shadwick Billings and Pat Shadwick Johnson. Baby Mary Elizabeth died shortly after birth in 1934 and L.D. "Hotshot" died on April 28, 1991.
