Notes for Crawford Ousley:
Crawford Ousley moved to Osage County, Missouri in 1855/6, was living in Gasconade County in 1860, Pulaski County in 1870 and 1880 and Phelps County in 1900. He had patented 1000 acres, "more or less" according to the legal description and part of that land later went to form a part of Fort Leonard Wood. The farm on Big Piney was located in both Pulaski and Phelps Counties with the big house being in Phelps County. In 1903 he sold his farm on Piney to his son Joseph Sherman Ousley and moved to Crocker, where he died. His death was the result of blood poisoning from a corn on his toe. His toe was removed and afterwards his leg was amputated between the ankle and the knee, but the poisoning had already spread too far. He was buried on the old homestead in what is now known as C. Ousley Cemetery. He left a will dated 4 Dec 1908 (Pulaski County Wills, C: 38).

From 24 Aug 1862 to 26 Oct 1862 he served as a Private in Company C, 28th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia (USA). On 1 May 1863, he enlisted in Company B of that regiment. He was 1st married to Melinda Lett, daughter of William and Sarah (Dagney) Lett. He was married 2ndly, to Malinda Cox, daughter of William and Precious (Campbell) Cox. In 1880, Malinda Ousley and 8 children were living in Phelps County in another house in "Kaintuck Holla," i.e. Kentucky Hollow. In 1900, she was living in Pulaski County with a daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren. Malinda died in Los Angeles, California and was buried in Inglewood Cemetery, Los Angeles County. He was married 3rdly, apparently while still married to his 2nd wife, to Catherine W. Cox, half-sister of his 2nd wife, being the daughter of William and Mary (Rogers) Cox. They lived together in the big house, which burned down, probably in an electrical fire, in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Catherine (Cox) Ousley was buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Springfield, Greene County. In 1910, she was living with her son Charlie in Pulaski County.

The majority of information on the children of Crawford Ousley and their mothers comes from the Collection of J. J. Watts, itinerant minister, whose meticulous records are now stored in the Western Historical Manuscripts Collection, University of Missouri.
