Mary had written a letter to her parents David and Ursula and was dated 17 Sept 1818. I have transcribed the letter as it was written.
" Dear father and mother,
I Gladly imbrace this oppertunyty of wighting a few line to you and to inform you that we are in a reasonable state of helth at this time thanks be to God For his Murcy hoping these few loines will find you and yours in the same state helth
I have nothing strang to inform you at present but our afectunat father is Dead. he died the 8 day of may last. he lay sick about 2 weeks. we have another son. it was born 28th of July. it weighed 12 pound and a half in a bout 2 ours after it was born.
We have had a remarkable dry summer such a one I never seen before. We had aBut 2 or 3 light rains from aBout the first of April till aBout the last of July and then we had some very hard rains and not much sence. But I hope I have made anofe to do me very well and will inform you that your money is redy and has bin ever sence last fall and anytime When you will Come or send you shall have it and I want you to Contrive this letter to John Burlingson as quick as you for there has Bin offered 25 Dollars for that Johnsons note.
Nothing more at present only me and my family Desirs to be rembered to you all and all inquiring friends so no more at present But remains Your Loveing son and Daughter tell Deth."
