Manchester Pilot on Missing List
Manchester, Ia. - Capt. William Boone, 23, youngest son of Ivan Boone of Mancester, and a pilot in the air force, has been reported missing in action over Germany, according to a message from the war department just received by his father here.
A letter received from a lieutenant in England by Mr. Boone this wee conveyed the information that Captain Boone was lost on his 35th, and last mission, and that he had intended to pay his relatives here a visit soon.
Graduating from the Delhi consolidated school in 1939 at the age of 17, young Boone enlisted in the air corps and received most of his training at Rantoul, Ill. He left the States last September and was sent to England.
Captain Boone, whose mother, the former postmaster at Delaware, died four years ago, has a brother, Lt. (j.g.) Howard Boone, who is piloting a plane in the south Pacific area.

Howard Davis Boone was born 4 Apr 1919, Manchester, Delaware Co, IA, died 14 Jan 2013, Woodside, San Mateo Co, CA

A native of Iowa, he won a scholarship to Iowa State, where he earned a bachelor's degree in agriultural economics. Following graduation, he joined the agribusiness company, Cargill. When the war broke out in 1941, Boone joined the Navy Air Corps as the first aviation cadet sworn in after Pearl Harbor. In 1946, he returned to Cargill, where he spent his entire career, rising to vice president of the company's Pacific Rim oil seed processing businesses, which included the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. In 1960, Boone moved to Woodside, California, where he was involved in numerous civic activities, and in 1974, he was elected Captain of the Mounted Patrol.
Boone is survived by his daughters, Kathy Boone (Bruce Raskin); Betsy Harms (Steve) and Bonnie Boone-Altshuld (Steve; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy and a daughter Janet Lee.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mounted Patrol Grounds in Woodside.
