Individual Details

Leigh Roy Wilkinson Jackson

(1774 - 31 Oct 1835)

This is the "Leigh" Wilkerson named in the will of Francis Jackson. On 28 Mar 1793, Leigh Wilkerson appeared in Court in Amelia Co VA and selected Burwell Jackson as guardian. Bond was posted by Burwell, Joel, and their brother-in-law James Vaughn. Burwell was already living in KY so must have come back to VA for this occasion. Leigh became the adopted son of his half-brother and thereafter his name appears as Lee Jackson or Leroy Jackson. He likely went with Burwell back to Kentucky as he's found in Warren County.

By 1802 & 1803, Leroy paid a poll tax in Warren Co; by 1806 he had 250 acres of land; in 1815 Burwell gave him another 250 acres.

Leroy Jackson's will was written 30 Sep 1835. Beloved wife Rachel to have all my estate except as otherwise disposed of and after her decease to be equally divided between son Warren and daughters America, Harriet, Emily and Julia Ann. My two sons Chesterfield and Henry are to be educated. Slaves to sons Warren & Clinton, to daughters America, Emily, Harriet, and Julia Ann. Also to Warren and the four daughters to be equally divided my part of the tract held between William Marshall and myself lying in Madison Co KY on Station Camp Creek, 3440 acres by survey. To son Henry after wife's death the tract I now live on with 200 acres of ridge land on the north and 180 acres of ridge land on the south; also slave when he's 21 years. To son Chesterfield the tract on which Col. Burwell Jackson lived on the Gasper River with a parcel adj which was allotted to me in a division between William Marshall and myself, also slave, horse, saddle & bridle when he's 21. There are several surveys on Shotes Branch adj the tract where Col Burwell Jackson sormerly lived - the use of the timber & sugar trees to be shared equally between Clinton and Chesterfield. The estate left in possession of wife not to be divided until Chesterfield reaches the age of 21. Executor to be son Clinton; in the event of his death, my wife Rachel, Executrix. Wit: J. A. Hines, James W. Burch, Francis W. Jackson.
Codicil. Deed to Clinton, 200 acres to be prepared by Col. William Marshall. My son has paid me. [same signatures as on will]

Leroy and Rachel are buried on the Luther Jackson Farm, Warren Co KY. This may very well be part of the original homestead of Burwell Jackson.
There is a lady - Julia Ann Jackson buried in this cemetery. She died 3 Dec 1853 at age 86 years - she was born 1767. I cannot find where she fits in the family but I'm sure she does. Perhaps the stone was misread or there was a typo. Daughter of Leroy & Rachel named Julia Ann was born in 1817 and died on 3 Dec 1853. She was 36, rather than 86.
