Individual Details
James Harris
(7 Jul 1766 - 22 Mar 1830)
The family lived in Albemarle County by the time of James and Mary's marriage.
No proof of the following - apparently died in Tennessee.
Moved to Greenbrier Co VA in 1810, on the Elk River near what is now Sutton, West Virginia.
Conducted the mill at Millington with his brothers-in-law, Robert and James McCulloch. Sold his property in 1822 and moved away.
In 1854, years after the death of James and Mary, their son James Crawford Harris tried to file for Revolutionary pension he believed was owed to Mary on the service of James. He claimed James had served as a substitute for part of the term of service for his brother Joel. No proof could be found and there were several men named James Harris who served from Virginia. The claim was never proved - Rejected #4666.
Nathan Harris, another son, presented a Bible record of the family record, 16 May 1854, in Bradley Co, TN. It said:
James Harris was born July the 9th 1766
My wife, Mary McCulloch was born October 28th 1771.
Births of Seven children in his own handwrinting:
Robert McCulloch Harris, Martha W., Nathan, Lucy, Adaline, Mary Ann, James Crawford.
James Harris & Mary McCulloch was married the 13th day of January 1790.
He has had the Bible since the death of his father.
The following are said to apply to Robert Harris who married Nancy Grubbs and is found in Madison Co KY ca 1795 - Robert was a son of Christopher Harris. This James was a son of Mary Harris, thought to have been a sister to Christopher. The Greenbrier location perhaps belongs in the family of James at a later date - James had no brother named Robert. Robert and James could have been first cousins and both born in Albemarle Co.
Attributed to Robert Harris who married Nancy Grubbs:
Robert fought for Virginia in the Revolutionary War.
•Note:
On 8 June 1782, Greenbriar County, 200 acres, part of a State
warrant for 496 acres, on Howard's Creek, (LH branch of
Greenbriar River in Greenbriar County). On 19 May 1784, served
on a Greenbriar County jury.
I assume this is Greenbrier Co, VA which later became part of West Virginia. But is it the same Robert Harris?
