John Henry joined the Arkansas State Troops for Crawford Co AR in the Spring of 1861 at the age of 21. He left the 3rd AR Infantry after six months and enlisted in the 11th MO Infantry in Oct of 1861. He the spring of 1863 he joined the 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles commanded by Col. Stand Watie. When he returned home after the war, his home had been burned; it took him over a year to find Hannah.

In 1870, he was living between J. C. Wood [my gg grandfather] and his widowed mother. Four children had been born by this census year.

Delmar Asbill sent me the death date of 1907 some years ago, but a file on WorldConnect shows that he died 26 Dec 1916 and is buried Northview Cemetery, Sequoyah Co, OK. That is also the date and place of burial as shown on FindAGrave.

6 Jul 1940. Mrs. Anne Johnston Bailey of Van Buren, Arkansas made application for a headstone for a Veteran. John Henry Asbill served as a Proviate in the 3rd Arkansas Infantry - he enlisted in 1861 and was discharged in 1855. He died 26 Dec 1916 and the stone is to be placed North View Cemetery, 18 miles north of Salisaw, OK. The headstone was to be shipped to Joe Asbill of Sallisaw.
