John Jenckes

( - )

John Jenkes of St. Anne, Blackfriars, London, cutler, and Sarah Fulwater of London, daughter of Henry Fulwater of St. Anne, gen. lic. (to marry) 8 Jan 1595/6.

That two men named John Jenks lived in the area of London at about the same time, practicing the same trade - each with a son named Joseph - is discussed thoroughly in the NEHGS Register of 1956.
John Jenks of St Anne, Blackfriars, London, cutler, obtained license to marry Sarah Fulwater, as above, Janury 1596/7. She had been baptized in this parish, 29 Mar 1763. Children Sarah and Joseph were baptized at St. Anne - Joseph in 1599 which coincides with his deposed age in Massachusetts, the traditional area of his birth as Hammersmith (which was 3 1/2 miles from St. Anne), and the trade of the father.
John Jenks of the Precinct of the Tower of London, cutler, was born about 1576 based on the record of his appreticeship, probably age 16, 1592. He inherited his membership in the White Baker's Company from his father, even though he did not follow the trade of baking. His mark on his cutlery was registered as the thistle, 1607. John died by 16 Aug 1626, when his son John, begin his apprenticeship. He wife was Hellen, perhaps Eleanor.
It is possible that John Jenks of Blackfriars was taking a second wife in 1597, and John of the Tower of London, a son by an earlier wife - and therefore the half-brother of Joseph Jenks who immigrated.
