Born in Jackson County, Kentucky in August of 1888, B.H. Gabbard joined the USN and served at least 20 years, retiring as a Chief Machinist's Mate at the US Naval Station American Samoa. CMM Gabbard's last position in the Navy was with the Electric plant in Satala. Caroline Bartley, of Western Samoa, was his second wife. They were the parents of four children: Benjamin, Jr., Lewis Elmer, Sarah Ann, and Douglas Bartley.

Benjamin H. Gabbard, Jr. died in 1986. His father's remains were disinterred and reburied with his son's casket in the same grave. In 2002, Ben, Jr.'s wife, Agnes Yandall Gabbard, died, and her casket was interred in the same grave above the casket containing the remains of Ben Sr. and Jr.
