John D. "Black John" Asbell

(1832 - 1876)



I believe John and first wife Nancy were living in Crawford Co AR, Jasper Twp, in 1860. They were in fact listed twice with nearly identical information. The only differences were the age of one child - Sarah was age 6 in one entry, age 7 in the other. Living with them was Margret Ramey age 21, b. Kentucky with Sanford A. age 4, born in Arkansas - I cannot identify her.

John was age 29 when he was mustered in as a Sgt. at Springfield, MO, 10 Jul 1862. He had enlisted at Crawford Co AR for three years.
On 31 Dec, 1862, it was noted that he had been absent on duty with Gen. Herrins command, but also absent without leave.
Jan-Feb 1863. Reduced from Sergeant to the ranks, Jan 22 1863. Authorized to recruit.

John deserted Nancy Wood during the War and never returned to her. She went back to Iron Co MO to live with her parents. There is no evidence John and Nancy were ever divorced, although both married again.

Both wives attempted to file on his Civil War Pension. There is a card in the file of Remarried Widows:
