"He volunteered at Knoxville, Tennessee, and served from December 1, 1812, until March 25, 1813, as private in Captain Samuel Bunch's Company of East Tennessee Volunteers commanded by Colonel John William and was engaged against the Seminole Indians in East Florida; during this service he was wounded in the right eye by the stab of an awl, which resulted in the loss of the sight of that eye."
